Full Description
Gruyères, the medieval village on the hill
Gruyères sits on a grassy hill at about 810 m, above the valley of the Sarine river and beneath the pyramid of Mount Moléson. Behind its old ramparts, a single wide cobbled street runs from the town gate up to the castle, lined with flower-decked houses from the 15th to 18th centuries, a stone fountain and small shops selling local cheese, wooden crafts and cowbells. Cars stay at the foot of the hill, so the village keeps a calm, timeless feel.
On this Gruyères day trip from Bern you have about 2.5 hours in the village for lunch, photos and exploring. Local favourites include alpine macaroni with cheese and potatoes and the region's famous meringues served with thick double cream. Is Gruyères worth visiting? For a perfectly preserved small town in a pastoral setting, it is one of the loveliest stops in western Switzerland.
Gruyères Castle
At the top of the village stands Gruyères Castle, built in the 13th century and for nearly 300 years the seat of the Counts of Gruyère, who ruled the valley until 1554. Afterwards it housed the governors sent from Fribourg. Inside, visitors walk through the knights' hall, period bedrooms, a chapel and painted salons, and the terraced gardens look out over the walls to the surrounding meadows and peaks.
Castle entry is not included in this tour, but you can buy a ticket on the spot during your free time; allow about 45 minutes for the visit. The castle is generally open every day of the year, with shorter hours in winter. Even if you do not go in, the courtyard gate and the views from the ramparts make a fine photo stop.
The Gruyère cheese show dairy
At the foot of the hill, a modern show dairy lets you watch Gruyère being made through large windows. Each round wheel weighs around 35 kg and needs about 400 litres of fresh milk from cows that graze the local pastures. You follow the process step by step, from heating and curdling the milk to pressing the wheels, then see the cellar where thousands of wheels mature on wooden shelves.
Gruyère has held protected designation of origin status since 2001 and matures for at least five months, often far longer. The included tasting lets you compare young and well-aged cheese side by side and notice how flavour deepens with time. Cheese is usually made in the morning and around midday, so the timing of this tour gives you a good chance to see the cheesemakers at work. Plan about 1 hour here.
The Swiss chocolate factory in Broc
A short train ride down the valley brings you to Broc, where a chocolate factory has operated since 1898, drawing on the rich milk of the Gruyère pastures. The visit begins with an interactive exhibition on the history of chocolate, from the ancient Americas to the invention of Swiss milk chocolate, and continues past a small production line where you can see and smell the chocolate being shaped.
The best part for most visitors is the tasting room, where you sample a wide range of pralines and bars at your own pace. There is also a shop and a café. Including the guided introduction and tasting, plan around 2 hours. If you are wondering how to get to Broc from Gruyères, a local train covers the short hop in minutes, and your guide takes care of the tickets and timing.
Through the Fribourg countryside by train
The journey from Bern itself is part of the pleasure. The train crosses the bilingual canton of Fribourg, where German-speaking and French-speaking Switzerland meet, passing farms with wide roofs, rolling hills and, as you approach Bulle, the first limestone peaks of the pre-Alps. The ride takes about 1.5 hours each way, with your guide explaining the region's traditions as you go.
The best time to visit Gruyères is from late spring to early autumn, when the meadows are green and the cows are out on the pastures; in September and October some villages celebrate the return of the herds from the high pastures. Winter brings snow-dusted roofs and fewer visitors, and the dairy and chocolate factory are pleasant indoor visits in any weather.

The price is per person, with a reduced rate for children. The booking panel on this page shows the current price for each traveller type.
Is hotel pickup included?
No. The tour starts and ends at the tourist information office in Bern main railway station.

How long is the tour?
About 8.5 hours, from 08:45 until the evening return to Bern station.
Is it suitable for children and people with reduced mobility?
