Full Description
Interlaken and the Road to the Reichenbach Airfield
Interlaken, squeezed between Lake Thun and Lake Brienz below the Jungfrau massif, is the Swiss centre for adventure sports, and skydiving is its biggest thrill. The jumps do not take off from the town itself: after check-in at the meeting point, a bus carries jumpers about 30 minutes along Lake Thun into the Kander Valley to the small airfield at Reichenbach im Kandertal, where the drop zone is.
The seats on the bus are reserved for jumpers, so friends who want to watch should drive or take the train to Reichenbach themselves. At the airfield you are weighed and measured, sign the forms and meet your tandem master, who fits your harness and explains the body position for exit, free fall and landing.
The Climb: Lakes and Glaciers from the Plane
The skydiving plane circles for around 15 minutes as it climbs, and this quiet part of the day is a sightseeing flight in its own right. Below you lie the blue-green waters of Lake Thun and Lake Brienz, the Bödeli plain with Interlaken, and the steep valleys of Lauterbrunnen and the Kander, while glaciers spill from the high peaks.
The Swiss Alps from above look very different from the view at the railway stations: you see how the ridges connect and how the glaciers feed the rivers. Tandem skydiving in Interlaken is one of the few ways to see the whole Jungfrau region in one sweep, so keep your eyes open and let your instructor point out the landmarks before the door opens.
Free Fall beside the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau
The jump altitude of about 4,000 metres is almost exactly the height of the Eiger summit at 3,967 metres, with the Mönch at 4,110 metres and the Jungfrau at 4,158 metres close by. When the door opens you and your tandem master slide to the edge and leave the plane together, falling for about 45 seconds and reaching speeds of around 200 km/h.
Is skydiving over the Swiss Alps worth it? For many people it is the single most intense moment of their trip: the noise of the wind, the cold air and the peaks at eye level. A camera on your instructor's wrist can record the fall, and photo and video packages are sold on site if you want to keep the moment.
Under the Canopy: Gliding Down to the Kander Valley
At about 1,500 metres the parachute opens and the rush suddenly turns into silence. The canopy ride lasts five to seven minutes, long enough for your tandem master to show you how to steer, turn gently and follow the valley towards the landing field beside the airfield.
You lift your legs for landing and usually finish with a soft slide on the grass. The full experience, including transfers, briefing and waiting for the right weather window, takes about 3.5 hours. The best time to skydive over the Alps is on a clear, stable day; flights run all year, in summer over green valleys and in winter over snow.
