Full Description

From Lucerne to Engelberg

How to get to Mount Titlis from Lucerne is simple on this trip: our coach follows the southern arm of Lake Lucerne past Stans, then climbs the Engelberg valley, a drive of about 45 minutes. Engelberg sits at about 1,000 metres around a Benedictine monastery founded in 1120, whose white abbey church still stands out against the dark forests and limestone cliffs.

The Titlis valley station is a short walk from the coach park. Doing this by public transport means a train from Lucerne and a walk at the other end, so a guided trip saves time and planning, especially with children. Halal options in Engelberg and on the mountain are limited, so it is wise to eat in Lucerne before or after.

Trübsee and Stand: the gondola climb

The first stage is a modern gondola from Engelberg to Trübsee, a plateau at about 1,800 metres around a small mountain lake. In summer the lake is a deep blue-green framed by meadows; in winter it freezes and disappears under snow. The gondola continues to Stand at about 2,400 metres, where the rock and ice of the summit wall come close.

Watch the change of landscape from the cabin: pastures and fir trees give way to scree, then to permanent snow. The ride from the valley to Stand takes around 20 minutes, a good moment for photos looking back over the Engelberg valley and towards the lakes of central Switzerland.

The Rotair and the Titlis summit station

From Stand, the Rotair takes over. Opened in 1992 as the world's first revolving cable car, it turns a full 360 degrees on the five-minute ride, giving everyone a window onto the glacier and the cliffs. The summit station stands at just over 3,000 metres on Klein Titlis, below the true summit of 3,238 metres.

From the snow terraces the panorama reaches across central Switzerland to the Bernese Alps on clear days. Is Mount Titlis worth visiting? For many travellers it is the easiest way to stand on a real glacier in Switzerland. Remember the altitude: walk slowly, drink water and keep warm. The best time to visit Titlis for views is a clear morning or a settled high-pressure day.

Cliff Walk and the glacier cave

Just outside the summit station, the Cliff Walk suspension bridge hangs along the cliff at just over 3,000 metres. It is about 100 metres long and one metre wide, with a drop of around 500 metres below, and it is often called Europe's highest suspension bridge. Crossing takes a few minutes and the gentle sway is part of the thrill; it may close in strong wind.

Back inside, a tunnel leads into the glacier cave, a path cut about ten metres beneath the ice surface and lit in soft blue. The air stays below freezing all year, so keep gloves on and step carefully. Both visits together take about 30 to 40 minutes.

Ice Flyer and the Glacier Park

With the default option you ride the Ice Flyer, a chairlift that floats low over the crevasses of the Titlis glacier from the summit area down to the Glacier Park. From the open chair you look straight into cracks and blue ice walls, a view you cannot get from the cabins.

The Glacier Park is a snow playground on the glacier where you can slide down prepared tracks on snow tubes. It is the part of this Titlis tour with snow park that children enjoy most, but adults rarely resist a few laps. Opening of the Glacier Park and the Ice Flyer depends on season and weather, and the staff on the mountain decide when they run.

Frequently Asked Questions

Straight answers to what travellers ask us most, before they book.

Is this a shared or a private tour?

It is a shared group trip by coach with an English-speaking driver-guide. On the mountain you explore at your own pace within the group's schedule.

What is the difference between the two options?

The default option includes the Ice Flyer chairlift over the glacier. The second option has the same summit day with the Rotair, Cliff Walk, glacier cave and snow tubing, without the Ice Flyer.

Is the price per person or per group?

The price is per person, with a lower child price for the child age band. The booking panel on this page shows the current price of each option.

Is hotel pickup included?

No. The trip starts and ends at a central Lucerne meeting point that we send with your confirmation.

What is included?

Round-trip coach from Lucerne with an English-speaking driver-guide, the gondola via Trübsee and Stand, the Rotair to the summit station, the Cliff Walk, the glacier cave when open and snow tubing at the Glacier Park; the default option adds the Ice Flyer.

How long is the trip?

About 6 hours, leaving Lucerne at about 11:15 and returning in the late afternoon.

Is it suitable for children?

Yes. Children enjoy the revolving cable car, the glacier cave and the snow tubing, and a child price applies. They must stay with an adult at all times.

Is it suitable for people with reduced mobility?

Only partly. The cable cars and summit station have lifts, but the Cliff Walk, glacier cave, Ice Flyer and Glacier Park involve steps, snow and icy ground, so it is not suitable for wheelchair users.

What should I bring?

Warm clothes, gloves, a hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, sturdy shoes, water, snacks and your passport or ID.

When is the best time to visit Mount Titlis?

Titlis has snow all year. Clear days give the best views; summer brings green valleys below the glacier, and winter brings deep snow everywhere. Mountain weather can change within an hour.

Do I need to worry about altitude?

Most visitors feel only slight breathlessness at just over 3,000 metres. Move slowly, drink water and avoid rushing up stairs. People with heart or serious breathing problems should consult a doctor first.

How do I book and confirm?
