Full Description
Engelberg, the monastery village
Engelberg sits at about 1,000 metres in a wide green valley surrounded by high peaks, and grew around a Benedictine monastery founded in 1120 whose white buildings still dominate the village. Monks still live there, and the large baroque church is open to visitors. In winter Engelberg is a lively ski resort; in summer its meadows, waterfalls and lakes make it a peaceful mountain base.
How to get to Engelberg: the direct train from Lucerne takes about 45 minutes, and from Zurich around one hour and 45 minutes with one change. A Titlis day trip from Lucerne or Zurich is therefore easy to plan. The Titlis valley station is a short walk or local bus ride from Engelberg railway station, and our team can arrange a private transfer if you prefer to go by car.
The ride up: Trübsee and the Rotair
The ascent has three stages. First, small gondola cabins climb from Engelberg to Trübsee at about 1,800 metres, a mountain lake where many visitors stop on the way down. A larger cable car continues to Stand at about 2,430 metres, where the rock and snow begin. The final section is the Rotair, opened in 1992 as the first rotating cable car in the world.
During the five-minute ride the floor of the Rotair turns slowly through a full circle, so every passenger enjoys the view of the glacier, the crevasses and the peaks without moving. The whole journey from Engelberg to the top takes about 45 minutes, depending on queues. On busy summer days, starting early helps you avoid the longest waits.
Titlis Cliff Walk
Just outside the summit station hangs the Titlis Cliff Walk, opened in 2012 as the highest suspension bridge in Europe at about 3,041 metres. It is around 100 metres long and only about a metre wide, and it stretches across a void of roughly 500 metres above the glacier. The views over the Bernese and Central Swiss Alps are breathtaking on a clear day.
Reaching the bridge involves stairs and a short path through a tunnel and over snow, so wear shoes with good grip. The bridge may close in strong wind or storms. If you do not like heights, the panorama terrace of the summit station offers almost the same view with solid ground under your feet.
The glacier cave, Ice Flyer and glacier park
Below the summit station, a tunnel leads into the glacier cave, a cold blue passage carved about ten metres beneath the surface of the ice. Lit in soft colours, it lets you see the layers of ancient ice from the inside, and the temperature stays below zero all year. It is a short, easy visit that children especially enjoy.
From the Stand station, the Ice Flyer chairlift glides low over the glacier crevasses to the glacier park, where in the warmer months you can slide down the snow on tubes and sledges. Both are included in your ticket when they operate, usually from late spring to autumn and weather permitting. Is Mount Titlis worth visiting? For guaranteed snow and glacier views close to Lucerne, it is hard to beat.
Best time to visit Titlis and practical tips
The best time to visit Titlis is a clear morning: views are usually sharpest early in the day and crowds build after late morning. Summer, from June to September, offers the full programme including the Ice Flyer and glacier park, while winter brings deep snow and skiing. Clouds can hide everything, so check the summit webcams before you go, as views are never guaranteed.
At 3,020 metres it is cold and the sun is strong even in summer: bring a warm jacket, gloves, a hat, sunglasses and sun cream. Halal food is limited in Engelberg and at the top, though vegetarian dishes are available; Zurich has easy halal options. The cable cars and summit station are wheelchair accessible, but the Cliff Walk and the snow paths involve steps.
