Full Description

The St. Beatus Caves and their legend

The St. Beatus Caves lie in the limestone cliffs of the Niederhorn, below the village of Beatenberg, on the north shore of Lake Thun. Water has carved them over millions of years, and explorers have mapped many kilometres of passages, of which about one kilometre is open to visitors along a safe, lit path. The caves first opened to tourists in the early 20th century.

They take their name from a local legend of a hermit monk called Beatus, who is said to have driven a dragon from the cave and lived there in the early Middle Ages. A small hermit's cell at the entrance recalls the story, and the cave was once a place of pilgrimage. Is St. Beatus Caves worth visiting? For a half-day near Interlaken that mixes nature, legend and geology, it is one of the best choices.

Inside the caves: the illuminated path

Beyond the entrance the path winds through grottos, narrow canyons and high halls, lit to bring out the shapes of stalactites hanging from the ceiling and stalagmites rising from the floor. Some formations look like curtains, others like towers or frozen waterfalls, and each hall has its own character.

Everywhere you hear water: streams run beneath the walkways and waterfalls crash down inside the mountain, especially after snowmelt or rain. The path has steps and can be damp, so good shoes matter. Allow about an hour for the cave itself, following the audio guide at your own pace. The constant 8 to 10°C feels cool, so bring a warm layer even in August.

The cave museum

Your ticket includes the cave museum near the entrance, a good place to start. Displays explain how limestone caves form, why stalactites grow only a few millimetres per century, and how cave explorers crawl, climb and dive to map new passages.

You can see equipment used by cavers over the decades, fossils and rock samples, and models of the cave system that show how far the passages reach into the mountain. The English audio guide and the guide app add stories and background, making the museum interesting for teenagers and adults alike. Plan 20 to 30 minutes here. Children often enjoy the hands-on displays before heading into the dark passages.

How to get to the St. Beatus Caves

The caves are at Sundlauenen on the road between Interlaken and Thun. How to get to St. Beatus Caves from Interlaken: the local bus towards Thun from Interlaken West stops at the caves in about 15 minutes, and in summer the lake boats on Lake Thun call at the landing stage below. From the bus stop it is about a 10-minute uphill walk to the ticket desk, where you exchange your ticket.

St. Beatus Caves opening hours usually run daily from spring to late autumn, from morning to late afternoon; the caves close in winter and can close briefly after very heavy rain, so check the hours on the day. A visit including the museum takes 1.5 to 2 hours.

The north shore of Lake Thun and Beatenberg

From the cave terrace you look out over Lake Thun, larger and greener than its neighbour Lake Brienz, with the Niesen pyramid and the snowy Bernese Alps across the water. A gorge with a waterfall tumbles from the cave entrance towards the lake through the forest.

Above the caves, Beatenberg is a sunny village on a terrace high above the lake, linked by funicular to the lake shore at Beatenbucht, with wide views of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau. The best time to visit St. Beatus Caves is a rainy or very hot day, when the cool caves are at their most welcome. Halal choices near the caves are limited, so plan meals in Interlaken.
