Full Description
Wilderswil, the gateway village
Wilderswil is a farming village at the mouth of the Lütschine valleys, just south of Interlaken. Many visitors ask how to get to Schynige Platte: take a regional train from Interlaken Ost towards Lauterbrunnen or Grindelwald and get off at Wilderswil after about five minutes. The cogwheel trains leave from their own platform at the same station, so the change is simple.
The village itself is quiet, with timber chalets, orchards and a view up to the ridge you are about to climb. If you are staying in Interlaken, Wilderswil is also close enough to reach by local bus or by car, with parking near the station. Note that the short train between Interlaken and Wilderswil is not included in this ticket, though it is covered by the Swiss Travel Pass and several regional passes. Arrive early in high summer, as morning departures fill up first.
The Schynige Platte cogwheel railway
The line opened in 1893 and still uses narrow-gauge track and a central rack to climb steep gradients. Over about seven kilometres it rises from roughly 580 metres at Wilderswil to almost 1,970 metres at Schynige Platte, a ride of about fifty minutes. Several of the carriages are historic wooden coaches with large windows, and some trains run with open-sided cars in good weather.
The journey is part of the pleasure. First you climb through beech and pine forest, then cross open pastures where cows graze in summer, and finally the train edges along the ridge with views opening on both sides. Sit on the right-hand side going up for the best glimpses towards the high peaks. Is Schynige Platte worth visiting? For many travellers it is the most nostalgic and relaxed mountain railway in the Jungfrau region, and far less crowded than the highest summits.
The Alpine botanical garden
Right beside the summit station lies the Alpine botanical garden, created in the 1920s to show the plants of the Swiss Alps in their natural setting. Paths lead you through rock gardens, small bogs and meadows where gentians, edelweiss, alpine roses and orchids grow at their natural altitude, each labelled with its name.
The garden is at its best from late June to August, when most of the flowers are in bloom, but even in September the colours of the autumn plants are lovely. A visit takes about thirty minutes to an hour at an easy pace. The paths are gravel with some gentle slopes; parts are manageable with a sturdy pushchair, though the garden is not fully step-free. Entry is included in this ticket, so simply walk in from the station.
Panorama ridge, views and seasons
From the summit area you look south across the Lütschine valley to the north faces of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau, one of the classic panoramas of Switzerland. Turn around and the ridge drops steeply towards Lake Brienz and Lake Thun, with Interlaken between them. A marked panorama trail loops along the ridge to the viewpoint of Oberberghorn, and a longer mountain trail continues towards the Faulhorn and Grindelwald First for experienced hikers.
The railway runs only in summer, roughly from early June to late October, and the opening dates depend on snow. The best time to visit Schynige Platte is a clear morning in July or September, before clouds build over the peaks. Mountain weather changes fast and views are never guaranteed, so check the summit webcam before you set out. Food is available at a mountain restaurant beside the station; halal options are very limited, so bring a picnic if needed.
