Full Description

Cruise across Lake Lucerne to Vitznau

The day starts on the water. From Lucerne lake pier 1 the boat heads east into the central basin of Lake Lucerne, a lake up to 214 metres deep whose arms reach deep into the mountains. Your guide points out the landmarks as you sail: Mount Pilatus at 2,128 metres guarding the city, the cliffs of the Bürgenstock across the water and the resorts of Weggis and Hertenstein on the sunny northern shore.

After about an hour you reach Vitznau, a quiet lakeside village at the foot of Rigi. The cruise is a highlight in itself, especially on a calm morning when the mountains reflect in the water. For anyone planning a Mount Rigi day trip from Lucerne, arriving by boat is the most scenic approach, and on this tour the tickets and timing are all handled for you.

The cogwheel railway from Vitznau

In Vitznau the red cogwheel train waits near the pier. The Vitznau–Rigi railway opened in 1871 as the first mountain railway in Europe, a bold project at the time that helped make Rigi one of the earliest tourist mountains in the world. A toothed rack between the rails lets the train climb steep gradients through pastures and forest in around 30 to 40 minutes.

Your guide shares the story of the line and of the grand era of Alpine travel, when visitors came from all over Europe to watch the sunrise from the summit. Sit on the lake side for the best views as the water drops away below. Is Mount Rigi worth visiting? Many travellers say this train ride alone makes the day.

Rigi Kulm and the 360-degree panorama

Rigi Kulm, the summit at 1,797 metres, stands on its own between Lake Lucerne, Lake Zug and Lake Lauerz, with no higher peaks right beside it. That is why the view is so wide: on a clear day you see a long chain of the Alps, from the snowy peaks of central Switzerland to the Bernese Alps, and in the other direction the green hills of the Swiss plateau stretching towards the Black Forest.

Time at the top lets you walk around the summit plateau, take photographs and visit the historic locomotive on display. The best time to visit Mount Rigi for clear views is often in the morning, and autumn brings some of the sharpest days, sometimes with a sea of clouds below. Bring a warm layer, as the summit is usually much cooler than Lucerne.

Rigi Kaltbad, the cold spring terrace

Below the summit lies Rigi Kaltbad, at about 1,440 metres, named after a cold spring that drew pilgrims to the mountain long before tourism began. Today it is a small car-free village on a sunny terrace with a chapel, restaurants and the modern mineral baths opened in 2012. The Chänzeli viewpoint nearby is a rocky balcony with a sweeping view over Lake Lucerne.

Depending on the day's timing, your guide may give you free time here for lunch, which is not included. Mountain restaurants serve Swiss dishes, but halal food is limited on Rigi, so we suggest bringing a packed lunch from Lucerne, where halal options are easy to find. A short stroll on the gentle Felsenweg path is a lovely way to spend spare minutes.

Aerial cable car and return to Lucerne

The descent is by aerial cable car from Rigi Kaltbad down to Weggis on the lakeshore, a ride of about ten minutes with the lake spreading out beneath the cabin and Pilatus straight ahead. It is a perfect contrast to the slow cogwheel train of the morning and one of the most photographed moments of the day.

From Weggis your guide leads the group back to Lucerne, arriving in the late afternoon with time for the old town and the Chapel Bridge. If you are wondering how to get to Mount Rigi without planning connections, a guided day like this is the easiest answer. Mountain views depend on the weather, and in high wind the cable car may be replaced by the train.
