Full Description

The Rhine Falls

The Rhine Falls at Neuhausen am Rheinfall, near Schaffhausen, is the largest plain waterfall in Europe: about 150 metres wide and 23 metres high, with an average summer flow of around 600 cubic metres of water every second. It was formed roughly 15,000 years ago, at the end of the last Ice Age, when the Rhine was pushed into a new bed and began to cut over hard limestone.

The result is a wide, roaring curtain of white water split by tall rocks, framed by green woods and a castle on the cliff. Is the Rhine Falls worth visiting? Its size surprises almost everyone: the noise, the mist and the sheer power are felt long before you see it. A Rhine Falls day trip from Zurich is one of the easiest nature escapes from the city.

Laufen Castle and the viewing platforms

Laufen Castle stands on the rocky south bank directly above the falls. First mentioned in the Middle Ages, it is today the entrance to the most spectacular viewpoints. Your Rhine Falls tickets give access to the paths and steps that lead down from the castle to platforms built right at the edge of the water, where the spray drifts over you and the falls rush past only a few metres away.

The lowest platforms are the most dramatic, so bring a light rain jacket and protect your camera. The recommended route is to walk down from the castle and take the panoramic lift back up, unless you continue on the circular walk around the falls. Allow at least 45 minutes for the castle side alone; the views change with every level of the path.

The boat ride to the rock

In the middle of the falls rises a tall limestone rock crowned with a Swiss flag. Small boats cross the basin below the falls and some land at the foot of the rock, where a steep stairway leads to a tiny platform at the top, surrounded on all sides by rushing water. Other boats circle close to the cascades for the best photos.

The boat ride is not part of the basic ticket, but you can add it on the day of the tour; your driver-guide explains how. Boats usually run from spring to autumn and depend on the water level, which is highest in early summer after the snowmelt. If you choose the boat, plan your free time so that you still have time for the castle platforms.

The riverside walk and the railway bridge

A circular path runs round the basin of the falls, linking the castle side with the Neuhausen bank. Upstream, a stone railway viaduct from the 1850s spans the Rhine just above the falls, and a footpath alongside it lets you cross the river with a fine view down onto the cascades. The full circuit takes about an hour at a gentle pace.

On the Neuhausen side you find a riverside promenade, playgrounds, cafés and the boat landing, which makes it a good place for families to relax. The best time to visit the Rhine Falls is June and July, when the water is at its fullest, but autumn colours and winter frost also give it a special atmosphere. After about two hours you meet your driver-guide again for the 45-minute drive back to Zurich.
