Full Description

Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve

The Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve was created in 2003 to protect a large area of natural desert south-east of the city, and today it covers about 225 square kilometres of dunes, gravel plains and ghaf trees. Access is limited to a small number of licensed safari operators, which keeps the landscape quiet and the wildlife relaxed.

Because driving off the tracks is not allowed, there is no dune bashing here; instead you experience the desert slowly, as it really is. A portion of every booking supports conservation work in the reserve. For anyone wondering whether a heritage safari is worth it compared with a standard safari, the reserve itself is the answer: it is the closest you can get to the original Arabian desert near Dubai.

Nature drive in a vintage open-top 4x4

After the transfer from Dubai, you climb into a restored open-top 4x4 of the type that first crossed these sands in the 1950s, when the vehicles opened the desert interior to travel and trade. Each vehicle carries up to nine passengers, and the open sides give unobstructed views and photos.

The drive lasts about an hour along the reserve's tracks. Your conservation guide explains how desert people navigated by the stars, found water and lived with the seasons, and stops for the plants and animals you meet along the way.

Arabian oryx and desert wildlife

The Arabian oryx, a white antelope with long straight horns, was extinct in the wild in the 1970s and has since been reintroduced across the region. In the reserve you have a good chance of seeing herds grazing between the dunes, along with sand gazelles and, with luck, Arabian red foxes and desert birds.

The guide explains how these animals survive with little water and extreme heat, and why the ghaf tree, the national tree of the UAE, is so important to desert life. Wildlife is observed from the vehicle or on short walks, always at a respectful distance.

Falconry display at sunset

As the sun sinks over the dunes, a falconer flies trained birds of prey in front of the group. Falconry has been practised in the Arabian Peninsula for thousands of years and is listed by UNESCO as part of the intangible cultural heritage of humanity.

You see the falcon dive at speed towards the lure, learn how the birds are trained and cared for, and have the chance to photograph a falcon up close against the glowing sky. It is one of the most memorable moments of the evening.

Bedouin-style camp and Emirati dinner

The camp sits within a private retreat in the reserve and is designed in Bedouin style, with low tables, carpets and lanterns. You are welcomed with Arabic coffee, watch a bread-making demonstration, have henna applied by an in-house artist and take a short camel ride near the camp.

Dinner is a four-course Emirati and regional meal served at shared low tables, with dishes such as slow-cooked meats, rice, salads and traditional desserts. It is a relaxed, sociable meal and a real taste of local hospitality.

Drumming, Yola dance and stargazing

After dinner, performers lead Emirati drumming and the Yola, a traditional dance in which the dancer spins and tosses a wooden rifle to the rhythm of the drums. Guests are invited to join in, which makes it fun for all ages.

The evening ends with a stargazing session far from the city lights, where the guide points out constellations once used by desert travellers to find their way. Our driver then takes you back to your hotel in Dubai.
