How the six days are laid out

The package runs on a simple logic: arrive and rest, then alternate heavy days with lighter ones so nobody is exhausted by the middle of the week. Day one is only the airport, the hotel and an evening to settle. Day two covers the city itself, old and new, ending high up in Burj Khalifa. Day three is the longest, the road trip to Abu Dhabi and back. Day four begins free and gives the afternoon and evening to the desert. Day five is the theme park followed by the dhow dinner, and day six squeezes in The View at The Palm before the airport. Each tour day has its own private vehicle and guide, and the hotel does not change, so you unpack once.

Day two: the creek, the souks and Burj Khalifa

The city day starts in Al Fahidi, the wind-tower quarter beside Dubai Creek, where the lanes are narrow and shaded and the guide can explain how the city looked before the towers. From there you cross the creek by abra, the small wooden water taxi, to the spice souk and the gold souk, where bargaining is expected and children enjoy the sacks of dried lemons and saffron. The afternoon moves to the modern city: a photo stop at Jumeirah Mosque, the Burj Al Arab viewpoint, then Dubai Mall and the lift up Burj Khalifa with your ticket already in hand. Timing the observation deck for late afternoon lets you see the city in daylight and the lights coming on.

Day three: Abu Dhabi and the Grand Mosque dress code

Your private vehicle leaves Dubai after breakfast for the capital, a straight motorway run with your guide explaining the federation on the way. The centrepiece is the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, white marble courtyards and one of the largest carpets in the world, and a place Gulf families find moving rather than merely impressive. Dress rules are enforced at the entrance: long loose clothing for everyone, and ladies cover their hair, which our families are used to but which is worth telling teenagers about in advance. After the mosque the day continues along the Corniche with a photo stop at Emirates Palace and a drive past Yas Island, with time for lunch before the road back to Dubai.

Day four: dunes, quad bikes and the desert camp

The morning is free, deliberately, because the Abu Dhabi day is long and the desert evening is late. In the afternoon a four-wheel-drive collects you for the run out to the dunes, where the driver does a controlled dune drive before the quad biking session, the part teenagers talk about for months. Quads are ridden in a marked area with a briefing and helmets; younger children usually ride with an adult or watch, and anyone who prefers can skip it entirely. Sunset over the sand is followed by the camp: carpets, cushions, henna, a barbecue dinner and traditional entertainment, then the drive back to the hotel with sand in every shoe.

Day five: theme park by day, dhow by night

You choose the park when you book. IMG Worlds of Adventure is fully indoor, which makes it the safer choice in the hot months and for families with very young children; Motiongate is largely outdoor and film-themed, with more thrill rides for older children. Either way your tickets are included and the private vehicle drops you at the gate and collects you when you say. Back at the hotel there is time to shower and change before the evening drive down to the Marina for the dhow dinner, a slow sail among the towers with a buffet on board. It is a long day, so we suggest leaving the park a little before closing to keep everyone cheerful.

Day six: The View at The Palm and the airport

The last morning is planned around your flight. After breakfast and check-out the vehicle takes you to The View at The Palm, the observation deck at the top of the Palm Tower, where the whole frond-shaped island, the Atlantis hotel at its tip and the coastline spread out below you. It is the one place from which the shape of the Palm is obvious, and it makes a fitting final picture of the week. Luggage stays in the vehicle, so there is no return to the hotel; from the Palm the driver goes straight to the airport, timed with a margin for traffic and check-in, and your guide's last job is making sure nobody left a passport in the hotel safe.

Hotels, breakfast and where to stay

Five nights with breakfast are included, and the hotel is chosen with you when you book according to your budget and the area you prefer. Families who want the beach lean towards JBR and the Marina; those who want the mall and Burj Khalifa on the doorstep choose Downtown; those who value quiet and space often pick a hotel with connecting rooms, which we request on your behalf. Breakfast in Dubai hotels is typically a large buffet with Arabic dishes, eggs, fruit and pastries, so it is worth eating well before the tour days. Check-in and check-out times follow the hotel's rules, and if your flight lands very early or leaves very late we explain the options honestly before you decide.

Who this package suits and who should change it

It suits a first visit by a family with children of school age or older, grandparents who are happy with a full day out, and couples who prefer a plan to a blank week. It is less suited to travellers with a baby who naps twice a day, because the Abu Dhabi and desert days are long; for them we would swap a day for a beach afternoon and a shorter city tour. It is also not a shopping holiday: there is mall time on day two and around the hotel, but if the trip is mainly about the malls tell us and we rebalance. Anything can be swapped, extended or removed, and the itinerary above is the starting point rather than a fixed product.
