Day one: landing, checking in and the glass slide at Sky Views

Your driver holds a name board at Dubai airport, handles the bags and drives you to the hotel to check in before the evening begins. Later in the afternoon the same car brings you to Sky Views Observatory, where a transparent slide runs along the outside of the building and a glass-floored walkway lets you look straight down at Downtown Dubai. The slide is short and smooth, which makes it the perfect first thrill for a nervous relative; the views towards the Burj Khalifa and the fountain lake are the real reason to come. Time it for late afternoon and you catch daylight, sunset and the city lights in one visit before dinner.

Day two, morning: Burj Khalifa At The Top

After breakfast your driver drops you at the Dubai Mall entrance closest to the Burj Khalifa ticket desks, and your At The Top tickets are pre-booked for a fixed slot so you do not join the queue for walk-in sales. The lift ride is famously quick and the doors open onto the observation levels, where wide windows and an open-air terrace face the sea, the desert and the highways in every direction. Go early in the day for clearer air and easier photographs. Afterwards you are inside Dubai Mall with the aquarium wall, the ice rink and hundreds of cafés, so lunch is easy and the driver stays on call for when you want to move on.

Day two, afternoon: the Dubai Frame in Zabeel Park

The Dubai Frame stands in Zabeel Park, and it is a clever idea rather than just a tall structure: from the sky deck at the top, one side of the glass looks over Deira, the Creek and the old low-rise city, while the other side faces Sheikh Zayed Road and the modern towers. A short exhibition on the ground floor tells the story of the emirate's growth and there is a glass panel in the floor of the bridge for those who dare. Families with young children like this stop because the park around it has shade, lawns and play areas. Day three: red dunes, quads and a Bedouin-style camp

The morning is yours for the pool, a mall or a lie-in; the afternoon belongs to the desert. Your private 4x4 collects you from the hotel and drives out to the dunes, where you take the handlebars of a quad on a marked track before the driver takes the wheel for a spell of dune driving and a stop to watch the sun go down over the sand. The camp that follows offers camel rides, sandboarding, henna, Arabic coffee and dates, then a grilled dinner with live entertainment. Because the vehicle is private, the pace, the prayer break and the departure time are yours to set, which matters on a night when children are excited and tired at once.

Day four: a helicopter or a skydive over the Palm, then the airport

If you asked for it when booking, we arrange either a helicopter flight that sweeps over the Palm Jumeirah, the Burj Al Arab and the coastline, or a tandem skydive from a drop zone on the Palm, harnessed to a professional instructor. Both are run by specialist operators with their own safety rules, weight limits and weather checks, and both need advance reservation, which is why we ask on day one of the conversation, not on day four. Your private car stays with you throughout, and after the flight, or a slower breakfast if you skip it, we take you to the airport in good time for your departure.

The hotel is booked for three nights with breakfast each morning, and we propose a property that matches your budget and location preference, whether that is Downtown near the Burj Khalifa, the Marina or a family resort by the beach. Airport transfers are private on arrival and departure. On days one, two and three the private vehicle and driver are yours for the programme described, so nobody hurries you at the Frame or at Sky Views. Tickets for the three observation attractions and the safari are included; the helicopter and the skydive are quoted separately on request because their prices and availability change with the season and the operator. Couples, friends travelling together and parents of teenagers get the most from these four days, because every day has a moment they will talk about later. Parents with younger children can still book it: the Sky Views slide and the Frame are gentle, the Burj Khalifa is a lift and a view, and on the safari the driver can leave out the rougher dune sections. What changes is day four; children generally cannot skydive, so many families choose the helicopter, which seats the whole party together, or skip the flight and use the morning for a beach. Older relatives can enjoy every viewpoint as long as they can stand and walk short distances, and lifts remove the stairs.
