Full Description
The red dunes of Lahbab
Lahbab, also spelled Lehbab, is a desert area roughly fifty kilometres from Dubai, known for its silky red sand and towering dunes. The colour comes from iron oxide in the sand, and it gives the red dunes desert safari its dramatic look, especially in the low light of late afternoon.
Because it is so close to Sharjah, Ajman and Dubai, the desert here works well for a half-day adventure. You leave the city behind on the drive, then reach an open landscape of rolling dunes where the horizon disappears. Sunglasses, a hat and sunscreen are useful, and covered shoes protect your feet from hot sand.
Dune bashing in a 4x4
Dune bashing is the classic desert safari thrill: an experienced driver takes the 4x4 up steep slopes and slides down the far side like a roller coaster. The vehicle is air-conditioned for the drive to the dunes, and passengers should wear seat belts and hold on tight.
The driving can be bumpy and is not recommended for people with back problems, heart conditions or pregnancy. To reduce the chance of feeling unwell, avoid a heavy meal two to three hours beforehand. You can ask the driver to slow down if you feel uncomfortable.
Camel ride, sandboarding and the quad bike
A short camel ride gives you a calmer view of the dunes, and can be repeated on request. Sandboarding is like snowboarding on sand: you strap onto a board and slide down a dune, an easy way to have fun even as a beginner.
The default option adds a 35-minute self-drive quad bike ride across the dunes. The minimum age to drive the quad is sixteen, and it is a self-driving activity taken at your own risk, so it is not covered by the operator's insurance. International travel insurance is recommended. If you prefer to skip the quad, choose the shared option without quad bike.
Timing, pickup and what to expect
The total time is around four hours including pickup and drop-off from Sharjah, Ajman or Dubai, and you may see sunset colours over the dunes depending on your departure. Shared safaris involve other guests, and there are also private versions with an exclusive 4x4.
Many people wonder about the best time for a desert safari. Late afternoon is the most popular because the heat eases and the light is beautiful, while winter months are generally more comfortable than summer. Bring water, and in summer wear covered shoes for safety.
