Full Description
Sunrise in the Dubai desert
The day begins in darkness, with pickup from your hotel between 04:15 and 04:30 and a drive south into the desert as the city sleeps. Your driver chooses a high dune facing east, where you climb a little way up and wait as the sky turns from deep blue to pink and orange, until the sun appears over the horizon and lights up the ridges.
The cool morning air, the silence and the long shadows on the sand make this one of the most peaceful experiences you can have in Dubai, and a favourite for photographers. Many travellers ask whether a sunrise desert safari in Dubai is worth the early start; the soft light and empty dunes are the reward.
Dune drive and sandboarding
Once the sun is up, the 4x4 heads into the dunes for a drive over the red-gold sand, climbing crests and gliding down slopes. The morning sand is firm and cool, and the drive is thrilling without being too long, so most guests enjoy it even if they have never been off-road before.
At a tall dune, you stop for sandboarding, sliding down the slope on a board standing or sitting. It is easy to try and great fun for families. With a maximum of six guests per vehicle, there is plenty of space and time for everyone to have a turn and take photos, and the low morning sun makes the dune pictures especially beautiful.
The Arabian oryx feeding station
The Arabian oryx is a white antelope with long, straight horns, perfectly adapted to the desert. It disappeared from the wild in the early 1970s, but captive breeding and reintroduction programmes in the region brought it back, and today it is a symbol of conservation success. Today the United Arab Emirates protect one of the largest populations in the world.
At the feeding station, you watch the oryx gather for their morning feed and get close enough for great photos while respecting the animals. Gazelles are also often seen nearby. Your driver explains how the oryx survive in such a dry landscape, getting much of their water from plants and dew.
Al Qudra Lake
Al Qudra Lake is a group of man-made lakes in the desert south of Dubai, surrounded by sand dunes and planted trees, and part of a large desert conservation reserve. The lakes have become a refuge for birds, and in the morning you may see ducks, herons, swans and, in the cooler months, flamingos on the water.
It is a calm, surprising place where water meets dunes, and a popular spot with local residents for weekend picnics and cycling. How to get to Al Qudra Lake without a car is a common question, as there is no public transport; on this safari it is simply part of the route. The best time to visit Al Qudra Lake is in the early morning, when the light is soft and birds are most active.
Picnic breakfast in the desert
Breakfast is served as a picnic in the open desert, with light refreshments including coffee, water and soft drinks, a relaxed moment to enjoy the view after the early start. Sitting on the sand in the morning sun, with the dunes around you, is a simple pleasure that few visitors to Dubai experience, and a chance to share photos of the sunrise and the oryx.
After breakfast, the 4x4 drives you back to your hotel, arriving by late morning, about 4 hours after pickup, with the rest of the day free. The best time for a desert safari in Dubai is from October to April; in summer, this sunrise trip is one of the coolest ways to see the desert.
