Full Description
Umm Suqeim fishing harbour
The ride starts from the small fishing harbour at Umm Suqeim 2, on Jumeirah Street, where traditional wooden fishing boats share the basin with water sports craft. It is a short drive from the Burj Al Arab and about 20 minutes by taxi from Downtown Dubai or Dubai Marina, so if you are wondering how to get to the jet car start, a taxi to the Umm Suqeim fishing harbour is the easiest way.
Arrive 15 minutes early for registration. The base has lockers, a changing room with a shower, Wi-Fi, a charging station and a shaded seating area with sea views, where you can relax before and after the ride. Show your booking voucher and ID at the desk.
Driving a jet car on the sea
A jet car is a small, fast boat designed to look and feel like a sports car, with a steering wheel, a throttle pedal and low seats just above the water. After a clear safety briefing, your instructor shows you how to steer, accelerate and slow down, and then accompanies you on the water throughout the ride.
Because the ride is private, you decide the pace: cruise gently to enjoy the views, or open up the throttle on clear stretches and feel the spray. Two people can share the car and swap driving, which makes it a favourite with couples. A jet car ride in Dubai is one of the newest water activities in the city and a fun alternative to a jet ski.
The Burj Al Arab
The highlight of the route is the Burj Al Arab, standing on its own artificial island just off the beach. Opened in 1999, the 321-metre tower is shaped like the sail of a traditional dhow and is the city's most recognisable landmark. From the water, you see its white fabric facade and the helipad near the top from angles impossible on land.
Your instructor pauses at the best spot so you can pose for photos and videos with the tower behind you, the perfect souvenir of your trip. Is the Burj Al Arab worth seeing from the sea? For most visitors, the view from a jet car is far more memorable than from the beach or a viewpoint.
The Jumeirah coastline and planning your ride
Along the way, you pass the long, wave-shaped beachfront hotel next to the Burj Al Arab and the white sand of Jumeirah Beach, with the skyline of the city rising behind. On clear days, the towers of Downtown can be seen in the distance, making this a short but rich sightseeing trip from the water.
The best time of day for a jet car ride in Dubai is the morning, when the sea is calmest, or late afternoon for golden light. From October to April the weather is ideal; in summer, earlier slots are cooler. Bring swimwear, a towel and your passport or ID, and leave large bags at your hotel.
