Full Description
Dover Castle: the key to England
Few places in Britain hold so much history on one hilltop. Long before the castle, Iron Age people built earthworks here, and the Romans raised a lighthouse whose tall stone tower still stands beside the small Saxon church of St Mary in Castro, inside today's walls. In the 1180s a powerful royal fortress rose on the site, with concentric rings of walls and towers around a massive keep, making Dover Castle one of the strongest castles in medieval England.
Its position explains everything: the cliffs overlook the narrowest part of the Channel, the gateway every invader and traveller had to pass. The castle survived a famous siege in 1216, was reinforced against invasion in the Napoleonic era and served the army right through the twentieth century. Is Dover Castle worth visiting? With so many eras on one site, it rewards a full day rather than a quick look.
The Great Tower and the medieval palace
The Great Tower is the heart of the castle, a huge square keep with walls several metres thick. Inside, its rooms have been recreated as they might have looked when the royal court came to stay in the twelfth century: bright painted hangings, carved furniture, a great hall laid for a feast, private chambers, guest rooms, kitchens and armouries. Lifelike projected figures guide you through the daily life of the court.
Keep going up the spiral stairs to the roof, where the view takes in the whole fortress, the town and harbour of Dover and, on a clear day, the coast of France across the water. This is the best spot in the castle for photos. Allow around an hour for the Great Tower, and expect narrow medieval stairs on the way up.
Secret Wartime Tunnels and the Underground Hospital
Deep inside the chalk cliffs lies a network of tunnels first dug during the Napoleonic wars to house soldiers. In 1940 they became the headquarters of the evacuation of Allied troops from the beaches of Dunkirk, when more than three hundred thousand soldiers were brought back across the Channel. The tunnels later served as a protected command centre during the Cold War.
The Operation Dynamo section that tells the Dunkirk story is currently closed for essential maintenance, but you can still explore the Underground Hospital, recreated with operating theatre, wards and the sounds of wartime staff at work. The visit is atmospheric and fascinating for older children and adults. Wear a light jacket, as the tunnels stay cool all year round.
Medieval tunnels, the siege exhibition and the grounds
The castle's newest attraction tells the story of its hardest times. Immersive displays bring to life the great siege of 1216, and you can walk through reopened medieval tunnels beneath the northern defences, where defenders once fought attackers digging under the walls. Outside, a siege-themed play area gives younger visitors space to run.
The grounds themselves deserve time: walk the ramparts, see the rare anti-aircraft gun in action on demonstration days and watch costumed re-enactors bring different centuries to life. The best time to visit Dover Castle is a dry day in spring or early autumn, arriving early. Remember that the last entry is two hours before closing, and some winter dates are closed, so pick an open date in the booking calendar.
