Full Description
Osborne House: a royal seaside residence
Osborne House stands on a gentle slope above the Solent near East Cowes, on the northern coast of the Isle of Wight. It was built between 1845 and 1851 as a private seaside retreat for the royal family, away from the formality of the palaces in London. Its design was inspired by the villas of the Italian Renaissance, with two tall belvedere towers, cream-coloured walls and terraces facing the sea.
For more than half a century, the house was the family's favourite place to relax, and many of its rooms remain exactly as they were, full of furniture, paintings, sculptures and personal objects. Is Osborne House worth visiting? It offers a rare and intimate look at how a nineteenth-century royal family lived away from public life, and the setting by the sea is beautiful.
The state rooms and the Durbar Room
Inside, a series of grand state rooms reveals the formal side of royal life. The council room, the dining room and the drawing room with its marble columns and crystal chandeliers were used to receive ministers and foreign guests. Corridors lined with marble statues and portraits link the different wings, while the private apartments upstairs show the family's sitting rooms, bedrooms and nursery.
The highlight for many visitors is the Durbar Room, a banqueting hall added in the 1890s and decorated by Indian craftsmen with intricate white and gold plasterwork, a peacock over the fireplace and gifts from India on display. It is one of the most unusual rooms in any British royal residence, and it reflects the close links between Britain and India at that time.
The gardens, the Swiss Cottage and the private beach
Outside, the terraced gardens descend in formal steps decorated with fountains, statues and colourful bedding plants, with views across the lawns to the sea. A walled garden grows flowers and fruit, and woodland paths lead through the wider estate, where many trees were planted by the family themselves.
Further into the grounds stands the Swiss Cottage, a wooden chalet built for the royal children, where they learned gardening, cooking and housekeeping; it is open from April to October. A path then leads down to the private royal beach, where a restored bathing machine recalls the days when the family swam here. On a sunny day, it is a lovely place to watch the boats sailing on the Solent.
