Full Description

The Mercat Cross and the Shadowy Closes

The tour starts at the Mercat Cross on the High Street, beside St Giles' Cathedral. For centuries this was the heart of Edinburgh's public life: merchants traded here, royal proclamations were read from its platform and punishments were carried out in front of the crowds. The present cross is mostly a reconstruction of 1885, crowned by a unicorn, and proclamations are still read from it today.

From here your storyteller guide leads you for about 15 minutes through the closes on the south side of the Royal Mile. These narrow, steep passages between tall stone tenements barely see daylight, and the noise of the High Street fades quickly. It is the perfect setting for the first stories of the evening, and the moment to get used to the audio device before you go underground.

The Blair Street Underground Vaults

South Bridge was completed in 1788 to carry a new street over the Cowgate valley. Its nineteen arches were quickly hidden by tenements built on either side, and the spaces inside them were divided into vaulted chambers. Blair Street, running down from the Royal Mile to the Cowgate, gives access to some of the deepest and largest of these rooms, set over several levels in the dark.

The chambers first served as workshops and stores for traders, but the stone leaked, the air was damp and within a few decades the businesses left. The poorest people of the city moved into the darkness, and the vaults gained a reputation for crime before they were sealed and forgotten. Rediscovered in the late 20th century, they are now considered among the most haunted places in Edinburgh, and this is the main part of the tour, about 45 minutes.

A Multi-Sensory Haunted Experience

What makes this Edinburgh haunted underground tour different is the way the stories are told. Rather than staged frights, it uses the senses: you smell leather and smoke as the guide describes the trades and fires of the past, handle original artefacts linked to the people who lived and worked here, and listen through audio devices that keep every word clear in the echoing chambers.

The tales are all rooted in real history: torture, murder, hangings, body snatchers and the city's real-life characters. Many visitors report a cold touch on the neck or a whisper in the dark, and the guides share the ghost stories attached to particular rooms. Is the Edinburgh vaults ghost tour scary? It is chilling and atmospheric rather than shocking, which makes it suitable for curious children with their parents as well as adults.

The Vaults Museum and Short Film

The last 15 minutes or so are spent in the Vaults Museum, where displays explain how the chambers were built, used, abandoned and rediscovered. A short film reveals what archaeologists found in the rubble, from pottery to everyday tools that tell the story of the trades once carried on beneath the bridge.

This part puts the ghost stories in context and is a calm way to end the visit. The tour finishes near Blair Street, a short walk from the Royal Mile, so you can easily continue to dinner or your hotel. If you want to know how to get to the Edinburgh vaults on your own, you cannot: the Blair Street chambers are visited only on guided tours like this one.
