Full Description
Tower Millennium Pier and the Tower of London
Your evening begins at Tower Millennium Pier on the north bank, right below the walls of the Tower of London. Founded in the 1070s after the Norman Conquest, the Tower has served as a royal palace, fortress, armoury and prison, and today it guards the Crown Jewels. Its White Tower, built of pale stone, is one of the oldest buildings in London, and the whole complex is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
From the boat you see the fortress floodlit from the water, a view few visitors enjoy. If you want to go inside, plan a separate daytime visit of about 3 hours; Tower of London tickets are best booked in advance. Arriving early at the pier also gives you time to walk along the riverside promenade and look across to the warship moored on the opposite bank.
Tower Bridge
Within minutes of leaving the pier, the boat glides beneath Tower Bridge, the most famous bridge in London. Opened in 1894, it combines a Victorian Gothic stone design with a steam-powered bascule system that lifts the two halves of the roadway to let tall ships pass; today the lifting machinery is electric, but the original engine rooms still survive. High above the road, two walkways link the towers and now have glass floors.
At night the bridge is lit in blue and white, and passing beneath it on the water is one of the highlights of any Tower Bridge cruise. Head to the open upper deck for the best photos, both as you approach and looking back as the bridge frames the Tower of London behind it. Many guests say this moment alone makes the evening.
Canary Wharf and the Docklands
Downstream the river bends through the former Docklands, where the West India Docks were once among the busiest in the world, handling sugar, coffee and timber from across the oceans. After the docks closed in the 1980s, the area was rebuilt as Canary Wharf, a second financial district whose glass towers now rival the City of London.
From the river at dusk the skyscrapers light up one by one, and their reflections dance on the dark water. Your boat turns in this stretch of the Thames and begins the journey back upstream, giving everyone on board the chance to see the skyline from both sides. It is a striking contrast with the historic sights further west, and a reminder of how much London has changed in a generation.
The South Bank and the London Eye
Heading west, the boat passes under the bridges of the City with views of the dome of St Paul's Cathedral, the Shard rising above London Bridge and the busy cultural quarter of the South Bank, where theatres, galleries and riverside walks stay lively late into the evening.
Then the London Eye comes into view, the giant observation wheel opened in 2000 and standing 135 metres tall. At night its capsules glow against the sky and its reflection stretches across the river. A ride on the wheel takes about 30 minutes and is a separate daytime or evening activity, but seeing it from the water as part of a London evening river cruise gives you one of the most photographed views of the city.
The Houses of Parliament and Big Ben
The westernmost point of the cruise is the Palace of Westminster, the seat of the UK Parliament. After a great fire destroyed most of the old palace in 1834, it was rebuilt in an ornate Gothic Revival style along nearly 300 metres of riverfront. At its northern end stands the Elizabeth Tower, which holds the great bell known as Big Ben, whose chimes have marked the hours since 1859.
Floodlit in gold at night, Parliament and the clock tower are the grand finale of the evening. The boat then turns and cruises back down the river to Tower Millennium Pier, so you see every landmark twice, with the live music playing on board. Is a Thames cruise at night worth it? For first-time visitors, it is the easiest way to see London's icons in one relaxed evening.
