Full Description
Early access and your Beefeater welcome
This tour is built around time: you enter the Tower of London with a timed early-access ticket, so the courtyards are still calm when you arrive. The highlight comes soon after, a private audience of 15 to 20 minutes with one of the Yeoman Warders, who becomes your guide for part of the visit.
The Warders, known worldwide as Beefeaters, are retired senior soldiers who live inside the Tower with their families. They share stories of the fortress, answer your questions and give you a glimpse of a day in their life, from ceremonial duties to the nightly locking of the gates. It is the kind of encounter that turns a Tower of London tour into a memory.
The Crown Jewels in the Jewel House
The Jewel House holds the most famous royal treasures in the world. You see the Imperial State Crown, worn at the State Opening of Parliament, and the crown set with the Koh-i-Noor diamond, along with sceptres, orbs, swords and the gold plate used at coronations.
Your guide explains the history of the pieces before you go in and how the collection was remade after the 17th century, when most of the medieval regalia were lost. Arriving early means a calmer walk past the displays; allow about 30 minutes. This is the part of the visit that most people mean when they search for Tower of London tickets, and the quiet early hour makes all the difference.
The White Tower and the royal armour
At the centre of the fortress rises the White Tower, the Norman keep begun in the 1070s and the oldest structure in the Tower complex. Inside, the floors display the royal armour collection, including suits made for Tudor and Stuart kings, as well as weapons and the elegant Chapel of St John, a rare survival of Norman church architecture.
You have about an hour here, enough to see the main galleries without rushing. On the White Tower Warden option you instead get a 30-minute early visit led by a White Tower Warden before the building fills up, which is ideal if armour and military history are your main interest. Children are often fascinated by the giant horse armour.
Tower Green, the Inner Ward and the ravens
The Inner Ward is the heart of Tower life. Here you find Tower Green and the memorial on the scaffold site, where several famous prisoners were executed in private, and the timber-framed houses where the Tower community still lives.
You also meet the ravens. Legend says that if the ravens ever leave the Tower, the kingdom will fall, so at least six are always kept here and looked after by a dedicated Ravenmaster. Your guide shares the legends and the real history of the birds, and you can watch them hop across the lawns. About 30 minutes is spent in this part of the fortress, with plenty of chances for photos.
Free time: the Bloody Tower, the walls and the Medieval Palace
Once the guided part is over you are free to explore at your own pace. The Bloody Tower recalls the mystery of the two young princes who vanished in 1483, while the Medieval Palace shows how the Tower looked when kings lived here, with restored royal chambers and a small chapel.
A walk along the battlements gives views over the moat, the City and Tower Bridge. Many visitors spend another hour or more here. The tour officially ends inside the Tower or, on the cruise option, at Tower Bridge Quay, so you can continue straight on to the river or the bridge. Cafés inside the walls make a good break before you continue.
Thames cruise option from Tower Bridge Quay
If you choose the cruise option, the tour ends with a sightseeing cruise on an electric tour boat from Tower Bridge Quay, right beside the fortress. It is a quiet, smooth way to see the Tower of London and Tower Bridge from the water after exploring them on foot.
This option is popular with families, as children enjoy the change of pace after a morning of walking. The total time is around four hours. The cruise is a relaxed sightseeing loop, not a transfer, so you return to the same area near Tower Hill and its station when it ends. Seating is covered, so it works well in any season.
