Full Description

Salford Quays and the Lowry

Salford Quays occupies the site of the old Manchester Docks, once among the busiest in Britain. When the docks closed in the early 1980s, the area was transformed into a waterfront district of apartments, offices, galleries and promenades, and it is now one of the most visited parts of Greater Manchester.

Your cruise departs by the Lowry, a landmark arts centre opened in 2000 with two theatres and a gallery devoted to L. S. Lowry, the Salford painter famous for his scenes of industrial streets full of matchstick figures. How to get to Salford Quays? The Metrolink tram from central Manchester takes around 20 minutes, and the Lowry is a short walk from the Harbour City and MediaCityUK stops.

The Manchester Ship Canal

Opened by Queen Victoria in 1894, the Manchester Ship Canal runs for about 36 miles from the Mersey estuary to Salford, allowing ocean-going ships to reach the city without passing through Liverpool. It was one of the largest engineering projects of its time and turned Manchester into a major port.

On a Manchester Ship Canal cruise you see the wide channel, swing bridges and dock basins that tell this story, while the skipper explains how cotton, grain and machinery once passed through here. Is a Manchester canal cruise worth it? For a relaxed hour that shows a different side of the city, yes, and the covered cabin means it works in any weather.

MediaCityUK and Imperial War Museum North

On the banks of the canal rises MediaCityUK, a modern waterfront district that houses studios and offices for several of Britain's major broadcasters, with a large public piazza and footbridges across the water. Opposite stands Imperial War Museum North, designed by Daniel Libeskind and opened in 2002, its angular aluminium shards representing a globe shattered by conflict.

The museum has free general entry and is a good visit after your cruise; allow about two hours. The best time for a cruise on the quays is late morning or early afternoon, when the light on the water and the glass buildings is brightest. The exact route of the cruise can vary with conditions on the day.
