Full Description

Snowdonia National Park (Eryri)

Snowdonia, officially Eryri National Park, was established in 1951 and covers more than 800 square miles of mountains, lakes, forests and coast. At its heart rises Yr Wyddfa, or Snowdon, at 1,085 metres the highest mountain in Wales, surrounded by glacial valleys and dark slate cliffs that once supplied roofs across the world.

A Snowdonia day trip from Manchester lets you see this landscape without the long drive yourself. The route follows mountain passes and lakeshores, with photo stops where the views open up, and passes through villages such as Betws-y-Coed, a gateway to the park known for its waterfalls, stone bridges and forest walks. The best time to visit Snowdonia is late spring to early autumn, though winter brings snowy peaks.

Conwy Castle and the Walled Town

Conwy Castle was built between 1283 and 1287 for King Edward I, during his conquest of Wales, by the master mason James of St George. Its eight great towers and high curtain walls stand almost complete, and with the castles of Caernarfon, Harlech and Beaumaris it forms a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Your Conwy Castle tickets are included, so you can climb the towers for views over the estuary, the town walls and the mountains beyond. Is Conwy Castle worth visiting? It is one of the finest medieval fortresses in Europe. Around it, the walled town has kept its medieval street plan, and on the quay you can see what is claimed to be the smallest house in Great Britain.

Chester: Roman Walls and the Rows

Chester was founded by the Romans in the 70s AD as the legionary fortress of Deva, and its city walls are the most complete in Britain, with a walkway of about two miles around the centre. Inside, the famous Rows are unique two-level medieval galleries of shops, with black-and-white timbered facades above the street.

Things to do in Chester during your stop include walking a section of the walls to the Eastgate Clock, built for Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee, visiting the Norman and Gothic cathedral or seeing the remains of the Roman amphitheatre, the largest uncovered in Britain. The city lies close to the Welsh border, making it a natural last stop on the way back to Manchester.

Travelling Through North Wales

North Wales is where the Welsh language is heard most often in daily life, and you will notice bilingual road signs and place names that tell stories of saints, rivers and valleys. Your driver-guide shares the region's history, from Celtic princes and English castles to the slate and tourism industries that shaped its towns.

The small group size means stops are quicker and more flexible than on a large coach, and the minibus can use narrow mountain roads. Weather in the mountains changes fast, so the order of stops can be adjusted on the day to give you the best views.
