Full Description
Battersea Power Station, a London landmark
Battersea Power Station is one of London's most recognisable buildings, a vast brick landmark on the south bank of the Thames designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott. It was built in two stages between the 1930s and the 1950s and produced electricity for London until 1983, before spending decades as a derelict giant.
It became an icon of popular culture, appearing on the cover of a famous 1977 album by Pink Floyd, and reopened after a major redevelopment as a place to shop, eat, work and explore. Lift 109 tickets give you access to the part of the building that lets you see it from the inside and above.
Turbine Hall A and the exhibition
The visit begins in Turbine Hall A, a soaring Art Deco space with polished details and original features. Records, film and displays tell the story of the power station, from the coal that fed its boilers to the campaign that saved it from demolition.
In the centre, a lighting installation glows as visitors interact with a large multiplayer touchscreen to collectively generate energy. In the Infinity Room, particles of light swirl and respond to your movements, making a dramatic countdown before you enter the chimney lift.
The Chimney Lift and the 109-metre viewing platform
An express lift takes you to the base of the north-west chimney, where you board the glass-fronted Chimney Lift. Lights ascend around you as it rises to the viewing platform 109 metres above ground, which is where the experience gets its name.
From the top you see the Thames winding below, with Westminster, the London Eye, the Shard, St Paul's and the towers of Canary Wharf in view on a clear day. You also look down onto the power station's roof and the surrounding developments. For the best Lift 109 views, choose a clear day and, if you can, a late afternoon slot.
Timing, bags, steps and getting there
Tickets are timed, so arrive at your chosen slot on the day. Pack light: there is no cloakroom, and only a handbag or small rucksack about A4 size is allowed. Large bags, luggage, bikes and scooters cannot be brought in, and pushchairs stay in the gallery, not the lift.
The experience includes 39 steps, so if you need a step-free route, contact us before booking to reserve the wheelchair lift. To reach Battersea Power Station, use the Northern line station of the same name, a river bus to the pier, or walk from Battersea Park.
