Full Description
West 56th Street: from the shop into Central Park
The rental shop stands on West 56th Street between Fifth and Sixth Avenue, in the heart of Midtown and about three short blocks from the southern edge of Central Park. Staff fit the bike to your height, hand over the helmet, lock and bag, and mark a suggested route on the map. Sign the online waiver before you arrive and you skip straight to the fast-track counter, which saves real time on busy summer mornings.
From the shop, walk or ride north to Central Park South and enter the park at Sixth Avenue, where the drive leads straight onto the loop. The shop is open daily, from 8:00 to 20:00 between April and October and from 9:00 to 17:00 between November and March, so plan a day pass around closing time. Bring an ID and a credit card for the deposit.
The Central Park loop drive
Central Park covers 843 acres (341 hectares) between 59th and 110th Street, and its main drive forms a loop of about 6.1 miles (9.7 km). Since 2018 the drives have been closed to cars, so cycling in Central Park now means sharing a wide, smooth road with runners, horse carriages and other riders. Bikes travel counter-clockwise in the marked lane, and riders stop at the red lights at pedestrian crossings.
On a classic bike the full loop takes about 45 minutes to an hour of easy riding, leaving time for stops within a two-hour rental. The only real climbs are Harlem Hill near 110th Street on the west side and the slope by the Great Hill; this is where an e-bike makes the ride effortless. Shortcuts across the park at 72nd and 102nd Street create shorter loops if you prefer a slower day.
Bethesda Terrace and Fountain
Bethesda Terrace is the architectural centre of the park: a grand two-level terrace of carved stone, finished in the 1860s, that steps down to the edge of the Lake. Its lower arcade has a ceiling of patterned encaustic tiles, and at the heart of the plaza stands the Angel of the Waters fountain, unveiled in 1873 to celebrate the clean water that reached New York through the Croton Aqueduct.
Lock your bike near the 72nd Street cross drive and walk down to the fountain, since cycling is not allowed on the terrace or along the Mall. From the waterside you look across the Lake to the cast-iron Bow Bridge and the trees of the Ramble, and rowboats glide by in the warmer months. Allow 20 to 30 minutes here; it is many visitors' favourite corner of the park.
Strawberry Fields
On the west side, near the entrance at West 72nd Street, lies Strawberry Fields, a landscaped memorial garden of about 2.5 acres that opened in 1985. Its centrepiece is a round black-and-white mosaic set into the path, where visitors often leave flowers, and the surrounding lawns and shade trees make it one of the calmest places in the park, even on busy days.
It is an easy stop on the West Drive: leave the loop at 72nd Street, lock your bike and walk in for ten minutes. Please keep voices low, as many come here to reflect. Just across Central Park West you can see the grand apartment buildings of the Upper West Side, a good reminder of how close the city remains while you ride through green fields.
The Reservoir and the north of the park
North of 86th Street the park opens around the Reservoir, a 106-acre lake built in the 1860s to store the city's water. Its 1.58-mile track is reserved for runners and walkers, so lock your bike by the drive and step up to the fence: the view south across the water to the Midtown skyline is one of the best in Manhattan, especially in the morning light.
Further north, the loop passes the Conservatory Garden, the Harlem Meer and the wooded hills of the upper park, which see far fewer visitors. With a longer rental or an e-bike you can also leave the park and explore Manhattan's neighbourhoods using the city's bike lanes, including the riverside Hudson River Greenway; the map and the staff's tips help you choose a safe route.
