Full Description
Tivoli Gardens and City Hall Square
Tivoli Gardens opened in 1843, which makes it one of the oldest amusement parks in the world still operating. Its flower beds, fairy-tale pavilions, lake and vintage wooden roller coaster from 1914 sit right in the city centre, next to the Central Station, and at night thousands of coloured lights turn it into a small wonderland.
Across the road stands the red-brick City Hall with its tall tower, facing City Hall Square, the start of the pedestrian street Strøget. This is the natural first stop on a Copenhagen hop-on hop-off bus tour. Tivoli tickets are not included, but the park is at the start of the loop, so it is easy to come back in the evening when it is most beautiful.
Amalienborg, Kastellet and the Little Mermaid
Amalienborg is the winter residence of the Danish royal family: four identical rococo palaces built in the 1750s around an octagonal square with an equestrian statue of King Frederik V in the centre. The Royal Life Guards march from Rosenborg to change the guard here at midday, and the Marble Church's green dome closes the view inland.
A few stops north lies Kastellet, a star-shaped fortress from the 1660s with grassy ramparts and a windmill, and just beyond it on the shore sits the Little Mermaid, unveiled in 1913. How to get to the Little Mermaid is one of the most common questions in Copenhagen; with this ticket you simply hop off at the stop beside Langelinie.
Rosenborg Castle and the Round Tower
Rosenborg Castle was built by King Christian IV in the early 1600s as a summer house in the King's Garden, then outside the city walls. Its Dutch Renaissance rooms are almost unchanged, and in the basement treasury you can see the Danish crown jewels and royal regalia, guarded since the 18th century.
Nearby, the Round Tower, completed in 1642 as an astronomical observatory, has no stairs inside: a wide spiral ramp winds seven and a half times to the top, where a viewing platform looks over the old city's rooftops. Rosenborg Castle tickets and Round Tower entry are not included, but both are close to the bus stop by the Botanical Garden.
Nyhavn and the Harbour Boat Trip
Nyhavn is the colourful 17th-century canal lined with gabled houses and wooden ships, and one of the most photographed places in Scandinavia. It is also where the harbour boat trip starts, close to bus stop 8, for guests who choose one of the combined bus and boat options.
The one-hour boat trip turns the city around: you glide through the canals of Christianshavn, past the Opera House, Christiansborg and the Little Mermaid, seeing Copenhagen as its merchants once did. Is the bus and boat combination worth it? For a first visit, yes, because the boat reaches canals that no bus can, and the view from the water is the one people remember.
