Full Description
Sunrise camel ride at the Giza Pyramids
With the 04:30 departure, your day begins at a stable on the edge of the desert, just outside the Giza plateau. As the sky turns from deep blue to orange, you set off on a camel or a horse, guided by experienced handlers, across the sand dunes south of the pyramids. Little by little the three great pyramids emerge from the haze, their limestone faces catching the first rays of the sun.
The ride lasts about one hour and includes stops for photos with the full panorama of the pyramids behind you, one of the most memorable views in Egypt. No riding experience is needed, as the animals are led at walking pace. On the 08:00 morning tour the ride takes place inside the pyramids complex instead, still with beautiful views of the monuments.
The Great Pyramid of Khufu
The Great Pyramid was built around 2560 BC for the pharaoh Khufu and originally rose about 146 metres, making it the tallest structure built by human hands for nearly 4,000 years. It is made of an estimated 2.3 million stone blocks and is the only one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World still standing.
Your Egyptologist explains how it was planned and built, how the blocks were moved and what is known about the workers who raised it. Entry to the inner chambers requires a separate ticket and is not included, but walking around its base and looking up at the colossal stones is impressive in itself. Many people wonder whether the Giza pyramids are worth visiting at sunrise: the soft light and calm atmosphere answer that question better than any photograph.
The pyramids of Khafre and Menkaure
Next to the Great Pyramid stands the pyramid of Khafre, which looks taller because it sits on higher ground and still keeps part of its smooth limestone casing near the top. Further south is the smaller pyramid of Menkaure, surrounded by three little queens' pyramids. Together they form the most famous skyline of ancient Egypt.
During the two-hour guided tour of the complex you learn how the three pyramids, their temples and causeways worked together as a vast royal burial ground, and how the plateau was rediscovered and studied. Your guide points out the best spots for photos and the details that are easy to miss on your own, such as quarry marks, boat pits and the tombs of the officials who served the kings.
The Great Sphinx and the Valley Temple
Guarding the eastern edge of the plateau, the Great Sphinx is carved directly from the limestone bedrock: a lion's body about 73 metres long with a human head, generally attributed to the reign of Khafre. It is one of the largest and oldest monumental sculptures in the world, and its weathered face looks towards the sunrise.
Beside it stands the Valley Temple of Khafre, built of huge granite pillars and beams, where your guide explains the funeral rites that linked the temple to the pyramid above. The area around the Sphinx is the busiest part of the plateau later in the day, so visiting in the morning is a real advantage. Your Egyptologist shares the stories, restorations and mysteries surrounding this iconic monument.
Egyptian breakfast
Breakfast is part of the experience: on the sunrise tour it comes right after the camel ride, and on the morning tour after the guided visit. Expect a traditional Egyptian spread, typically with ful medames (slow-cooked fava beans with olive oil and cumin), crisp ta'meya, the Egyptian falafel made with fava beans, fresh baladi bread, white cheese, eggs, vegetables and tea.
It is a relaxed hour to rest, ask your guide more questions and enjoy the flavours that Egyptians start their day with, accompanied by hot tea or coffee. Ful and ta'meya are eaten across the country, from street carts to family tables, so this is a genuine taste of daily life in Cairo. Tell us about any dietary needs when you book, and we pass them on so a suitable breakfast can be prepared.
Planning your visit to the Giza Pyramids
The Giza Pyramids complex lies on the western edge of Greater Cairo, about 30 minutes from central Cairo depending on traffic, and we handle the transfer both ways. The plateau opens in the early morning and closes in the late afternoon; the sunrise ride takes place outside the plateau, before the gates open, which is why it offers such a peaceful start.
The best time to visit the Giza pyramids is from October to April, when the weather is mild, while the summer months are very hot after mid-morning. This tour includes the Giza Pyramids tickets for the main complex, so you avoid queues at the ticket office. Wear comfortable shoes, a sun hat and sunglasses, and bring sunscreen and water.
