Full Description

The Valley of the Kings

The Valley of the Kings lies behind the cliffs of the Theban hills on the West Bank. For nearly five hundred years, from the 16th to the 11th century BC, the pharaohs of the New Kingdom were buried in rock-cut tombs hidden in this dry valley, away from the temples where they were worshipped. Inside the tombs, painted corridors and burial chambers show scenes from the underworld texts, in colours that have survived for more than three thousand years.

Your guide helps you choose which tombs to enter and explains the symbols on the walls, so a private Valley of the Kings tour from Cairo is much more than a quick look. Photography rules vary, and the valley is hot from late spring to early autumn, so wear a hat and carry water. Allow about ninety minutes here, which is the best use of a day trip.

The Temple of Hatshepsut at Deir el-Bahari

The Mortuary Temple of Queen Hatshepsut is cut into the cliffs at Deir el-Bahari, just over the hill from the Valley of the Kings. Built in the 15th century BC, it rises in three broad terraces linked by long ramps, and its clean horizontal lines look strikingly modern against the golden rock behind them. Many visitors consider it the finest piece of architecture in the Theban necropolis.

The painted reliefs on the lower colonnades record a trading voyage to the land of Punt, and the upper terrace has a shrine to Hathor. Your guide explains the story of the queen who ruled Egypt as a pharaoh and why later rulers tried to erase her image. The temple is exposed to the sun, so the morning visit built into this day trip is the most comfortable.

Medinet Habu and the Colossi of Memnon

Medinet Habu is the mortuary temple of Ramses III, built in the 12th century BC and among the best-preserved temples on the West Bank. Its high entrance gateway is covered in carvings of the king defeating his enemies, and the walls inside still hold traces of bright paint. The reliefs of the sea battles record events that shaped the end of the Bronze Age, and visitors can often explore with far fewer crowds than at the larger sites.

Nearby, the two Colossi of Memnon are seated statues of Amenhotep III, each about eighteen metres high. They once guarded the entrance to his vast mortuary temple, which has almost entirely disappeared. The stop is short but memorable, and the statues make a classic photograph on the road to lunch at a local restaurant in Luxor.

A felucca ride on the Nile at Luxor

After the West Bank sites, the day moves to the river. A felucca ride on the Nile in Luxor lets you sit in the shade of a white sail and watch the palm groves, the corniche and the Theban hills slide by, with the temples of the East Bank ahead. It is a restful change of pace in a day that is otherwise full of walking and stairs.

The sail is gentle and the river is calm, so it suits families and older travellers as well as couples. Ask the crew about the green banks of the Nile and the birds that nest along the shore. Late afternoon light is flattering for photographs, and your guide will tell you the best moments to take them.

Karnak Temple

Karnak is the largest temple complex in Egypt and was the main religious centre of ancient Thebes for about two thousand years. Each pharaoh added chapels, pylons, obelisks and halls to honour the god Amun-Re, so walking through Karnak is like walking through layers of history. The Great Hypostyle Hall, with its forest of towering papyrus-shaped columns, is the highlight and among the most impressive interiors from the ancient world.

A private Karnak Temple tour with a guide is the best way to understand the plan of the complex: the avenue of ram-headed sphinxes, the sacred lake, the tall obelisks and the carved walls that record royal campaigns. Allow about ninety minutes. Karnak is open from early morning to late afternoon, and late-day light makes the stone glow, which is why this stop is placed near the end of the day.

Luxor Temple

Luxor Temple stands on the East Bank beside the Nile in the middle of the modern city. It was built mainly by Amenhotep III and Ramses II in the 14th and 13th centuries BC and was linked to Karnak by a long avenue of sphinxes. A tall obelisk and giant seated statues stand in front of the entrance gate, and the colonnades inside are lit softly after dusk.

The temple is compact, so it is easy to see in about forty-five minutes after Karnak. It also has a later chapel and a mosque built into the courtyard, which shows how the site has been used continuously for thousands of years. Is Luxor worth visiting in a day? With a private guide and a plane, yes, because every major monument can be seen without hurry.
