Full Description
The Giza Plateau and its Pyramids
The Giza Plateau rises on the western edge of Cairo where the Nile Valley meets the desert. Here stand the three great pyramids built for the Fourth Dynasty kings Khufu, Khafre and Menkaure some 4,500 years ago, together with the Great Sphinx and the tombs of their courtiers. The Great Pyramid of Khufu is the last surviving wonder of the ancient world and was the tallest structure on earth for nearly four thousand years.
Quad biking is not allowed inside the archaeological zone, so this tour rides in the open desert just beyond it, where you see the pyramids from the same sweeping angles the caravans once did. Many people who search for a Giza pyramids tour only see them from the crowded car park; from the dunes you get a calm, wide view of all three together, especially beautiful in the early morning and late afternoon light.
Quad Biking in the Desert of Giza
The ride starts at a quad base on the desert edge, where the team fits you with your quad, explains the controls and runs a short safety briefing. You then follow your guide in a line across sandy tracks, small dunes and open plains for a full hour, at a pace that suits beginners while still giving a real sense of speed and space. No driving licence is needed.
Adults ride their own quad, while children under 15 share a double quad with an adult. Wear closed shoes and sunglasses and bring a scarf for the dust. Is quad biking at the pyramids worth it? For anyone who wants to feel the desert rather than only look at it, it is one of the most memorable ways to spend two or three hours in Cairo.
Desert Viewpoint and Tea Break
Halfway through the ride the group stops on a high point in the desert to rest. You are welcomed with traditional tea and a bottle of water while the guide points out each pyramid and explains how they were built and aligned. The view across the dunes to the three pyramids, with the city fading into the haze behind them, is one of the classic photographs of Egypt.
This pause is also the best moment for pictures of you with your quad and the pyramids in the background. Take your time: the stop is relaxed, and your tour leader is happy to help with photos. In the hottest months the morning departures make this break much more comfortable.
Camel Ride Beside the Pyramids
After returning your quad you swap speed for tradition. On the default option you ride a camel for a full hour across the sand around the plateau, led by an experienced handler at a slow, rolling pace that gives you time to enjoy the silence of the desert and the changing views of the pyramids. Camels have carried travellers across this landscape for centuries, and the ride gives you a very different feel for it.
If you prefer a shorter ride, choose the 30-minute camel option, or the quad-only option to skip it altogether. Mounting and dismounting are done with the camel kneeling, and the handler stays with you the whole time. Long trousers make the saddle more comfortable.
