Full Description

Fayoum Oasis, the green depression south-west of Cairo

Fayoum is a fertile depression in the desert south-west of Cairo, watered by a branch of the Nile that has fed farms here since ancient times. A Fayoum day trip from Cairo takes roughly two hours each way, and the contrast between green fields, canals, palm trees and the surrounding desert is the first reward of the journey.

In the Middle Kingdom the pharaohs invested in irrigation here, and the modern name of the region comes from the Coptic word for the lake. Today it is a place of farms, waterwheels and small towns, far quieter than Cairo. Your driver chooses the route to match the day's timing, with a comfort stop if you need one.

Tunis Village and Lake Qarun

Tunis Village is a small lakeside community known for pottery, with workshops, galleries and simple cafes. It lies on the shore of Lake Qarun, a large saltwater lake that lies below sea level and is the remains of an ancient, much larger lake that once covered much of the oasis.

Lake Qarun is a haven for migratory and resident birds, so even a short stop gives you a view of herons, pelicans or ducks, depending on the season. The light over the water is soft in the morning, and the village is a pleasant place to shop for hand-made pottery. Expect a stop of about an hour.

Wadi El Rayan lakes and waterfalls

Wadi El Rayan is a protected area of lakes, sand dunes and desert south of the oasis. The two lakes were created by channelling agricultural drainage water into the desert hollow, and the water that flows between them forms the waterfalls, often described as the only waterfalls in Egypt.

You can walk to the falls, watch the water drop against the desert backdrop and photograph the dunes beside the lake. Bring sun protection, as there is little shade. Many guests find Wadi El Rayan the most refreshing stop of the day, especially in warm weather, and it is an easy way to see why Fayoum is so popular for nature day trips.

Whale Valley (Wadi Al Hitan), a UNESCO fossil site

Whale Valley, known in Arabic as Wadi Al Hitan, was listed by UNESCO in 2005 for its fossils of early whales that lived about 40 million years ago, when this desert was covered by a shallow sea. Skeletons still lie where they were found, some with the traces of tiny hind limbs that show how whales evolved from land animals.

The site has marked trails and an open-air museum, and the surrounding badlands of eroded sandstone look like another planet. Whale Valley is reached by a 4x4 drive across the desert tracks, which is why the safari is part of this trip. Allow around an hour on site and keep drinking water, as the desert is hot.

Desert safari and practical tips for the day

The 4x4 jeep safari crosses dunes and desert tracks between Wadi El Rayan and Whale Valley, with the driver choosing a safe route for the conditions. It is exciting without being extreme, and children who enjoy cars and dunes usually love it, though the ride can be bumpy and dusty, so hold on and keep your belongings secure.

Lunch is included, and you should bring a hat, sunglasses, comfortable shoes and a light layer for the evening drive back. Start times are early, around 07:00, to avoid the heat. The best months are October to April, and summer trips should be taken as early as possible. If you are planning a Fayoum day trip, Wadi El Rayan and Whale Valley together make the most complete day.
