Full Description
The overnight journey from Sahl Hasheesh to Cairo
Cairo is a long way from the Red Sea resorts, around five to six hours by road from Hurghada and Sahl Hasheesh, which is why the day begins at about one in the morning. The vehicle is air-conditioned, and you can sleep as the road runs north along the Gulf of Suez coast and then west to the capital. Pickup from Sahl Hasheesh hotels is arranged as an add-on when booking.
If you are searching for a Giza Pyramids day trip from Sahl Hasheesh, this tour keeps the day efficient. The guide meets you at Giza, the schedule is planned in advance, and lunch and tickets are included in the default option, so you spend your energy on the sights.
The Pyramids of Giza
The Giza Plateau holds the three great pyramids: Khufu, Khafre and Menkaure, built in the Old Kingdom around forty-five centuries ago. The Great Pyramid of Khufu is the last surviving of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World and was the tallest man-made structure on earth for thousands of years. Khafre's pyramid looks taller because it stands on higher ground.
The tour includes the entry ticket to the Pyramids area, and your guide explains how they were built and what each complex included. Entry inside the Great Pyramid is not included and is optional. Many people ask about the best time to visit the Pyramids: the morning is best, cooler and quieter, and the early start gets you there in good time.
The Great Sphinx and the Valley Temple
The Great Sphinx is carved from the natural limestone bedrock, with a lion's body and a human head, and is generally linked to the pharaoh Khafre. It guards the approach to the pyramids and has watched over the plateau for more than four thousand years. Your guide explains the weathering, the restorations and the legends that surround it.
Next to the Sphinx stands the Valley Temple of Khafre, built from huge blocks of limestone and red granite. It is a clear example of Old Kingdom architecture and was part of the funerary complex linking the river to the pyramid. The visit takes around half an hour and adds context to the whole site.
The Grand Egyptian Museum
The Grand Egyptian Museum stands on the edge of the Giza Plateau within sight of the pyramids and is among the largest archaeological museums in the world. It presents the story of ancient Egypt in vast galleries, with giant statues on the grand staircase and a dedicated section where the treasures of Tutankhamun are displayed together.
In the default option the entry ticket is included and your guide leads the visit, choosing the key objects for the time available. Because the museum is huge, a guided selection saves you from wandering. Photography rules apply in some galleries, and bags may be checked at the entrance, so travel light. The galleries are air-conditioned, which is a welcome break.
The Egyptian Museum in central Cairo
Another option visits the older Egyptian Museum at Tahrir Square in central Cairo. Opened in 1902, it occupies a pink neo-classical building and holds an enormous collection of statues, sarcophagi, jewellery and daily-life objects spanning thousands of years. The collection is displayed in a traditional way, crowded and full of atmosphere.
Some guests prefer this option because it adds a look at central Cairo and the classic museum experience. Entry tickets are included in the ticket option. It is useful to decide in advance, so tell us which museum you would like, and we will set the option in your booking. The building also gives a feel for turn-of-the-century Cairo, and the guide helps you choose the best pieces from the crowded halls, from royal statues to jewellery and everyday objects.
Lunch, tickets and planning your Cairo day
Lunch at a local restaurant is included, along with bottled mineral water. Entry inside the Great Pyramid, an optional camel ride and drinks at lunch are not included. The no-ticket options let you pay at the sites yourself, which means carrying a card and queuing for tickets.
Wear comfortable shoes, a hat and sunscreen, and bring your passport or ID. The tour is very long, so rest on the road. The best months are October to April, when Cairo is cooler. Children can join but should be able to cope with eighteen hours in total. The guide keeps the timing tight, but a light breakfast box from your hotel before pickup is a good idea, and you can ask us to remind your hotel the day before.
