Full Description

The Pyramids of Giza

The three great pyramids of Khufu, Khafre and Menkaure stand on the Giza plateau on the western edge of Cairo, and they are the first stop of this private Giza Pyramids and Cairo tour. Khufu's Great Pyramid was built about 4,500 years ago and remained the tallest man-made structure on Earth for thousands of years. Khafre's pyramid, next door, still carries a cap of smooth casing stones, while Menkaure's is the smallest of the three but has three small queens' pyramids beside it.

Your guide explains how the pyramids were planned and what the burial complex around them contained. A morning arrival means cooler air, softer light and fewer crowds. Entry inside a pyramid is optional and is not covered, but you can see the full scale of the monuments from outside and take wide photographs from the panoramic viewpoint. Allow about two hours on the plateau.

The Great Sphinx and the Valley Temple

The Great Sphinx guards the approach to the Khafre pyramid and was carved from the limestone bedrock of the plateau. With the body of a lion and the head of a king, it is among the most recognisable monuments in the world. It stretches about 73 metres in length and has been repaired and protected many times over the centuries because the soft stone erodes in wind and sand.

Next to the Sphinx you can see the Valley Temple, built of massive granite and alabaster blocks. It was the ceremonial entrance to the royal funerary complex, where rituals were performed before the king's burial. Your guide shows you the best places for photos with the pyramids behind the Sphinx and explains what the statue meant to the people who built it.

The Egyptian Museum in Tahrir Square

The Egyptian Museum stands in the centre of Cairo on Tahrir Square, in a pink neoclassical building that opened in 1902. Its galleries hold statues of kings and gods, painted coffins, jewellery, tools and the objects of daily life, which tell the story of Egyptian civilisation across thousands of years. A private Egyptian Museum tour in Cairo helps you pick the highlights instead of walking past rows of display cases.

Please note that the famous golden treasures of the boy king are no longer displayed here, as most of them have moved to the Grand Egyptian Museum. Your guide builds the visit around the strongest remaining galleries and explains how each period connects. The museum is busiest around midday, so the early start helps. Plan for about ninety minutes inside and expect a security check at the entrance.

Khan el-Khalili Bazaar

Khan el-Khalili is the historic market of Cairo, founded in the late 14th century as a trading centre for merchants arriving in the city. Its lanes are filled with brass and copper work, lanterns, perfumes, leather goods, silver and gold, antiques and souvenirs. Craftsmen still work in small workshops behind the stalls, and the scent of spices and incense hangs over the narrow streets.

Shopping here is part of the experience. Your guide can suggest which shops are worth entering and share tips on how to bargain politely, so you leave with something you really want. Most shops open in the late morning and stay open into the evening. After a full day of ancient sites, the bazaar gives a lively, modern close to the tour.

A relaxed full day with lunch

Visitors often ask whether the pyramids, the museum and the bazaar can be done in one day. With a private tour from Cairo, they can, because one vehicle and one schedule remove the delays that groups face: no changing buses, no waiting for others and no hunting for parking. The order of the stops may change on the day to suit traffic and opening times.

Lunch is included and gives you a proper break in the middle of the day. The best time to visit these sites is from October to April, while summer days are more comfortable with an early start and the air-conditioned vehicle between stops. If you would like a longer or shorter programme, ask our team about the other private tours of Cairo and Giza.
