Full Description

The National Museum of Egyptian Civilization in Fustat

The National Museum of Egyptian Civilization, known as NMEC, stands in Fustat, the area of Old Cairo where the first Arab capital of Egypt was founded in 641 AD. It tells the story of Egyptian civilisation through the ages, rather than only ancient Egypt, with a central hall of highlights and galleries that follow themes such as writing, state and society, and beliefs.

The museum's Royal Mummies Hall, where kings and queens of the New Kingdom lie in low light, is a highlight for many visitors, after the royal mummies were moved here in a grand parade in 2021. If you are searching for a National Museum of Egyptian Civilization tour, a guide helps a great deal, because the collection is large. Allow about an hour and forty-five minutes.

Islamic Cairo

Islamic Cairo is the historic core of the medieval city, with hundreds of mosques, madrasas and gates from the Fatimid, Ayyubid and Mamluk periods. The area is listed by UNESCO, and streets such as Al-Muizz Street are lined with monuments that have stood for centuries. Your guide chooses the highlights of the day and explains the architecture, from minarets to ornate stonework.

The visit is on foot through busy old lanes, so wear comfortable shoes and modest clothing. Depending on timing, the day may also include a view of the Citadel of Saladin, which stands above the old city, and your guide will confirm what fits in the programme.

Khan el-Khalili bazaar

Khan el-Khalili is the famous bazaar of Cairo, founded in the fourteenth century, and it is one of the oldest markets in the Arab world. Its narrow alleys are full of copper lamps, spices, perfumes, silver jewellery, scarves and handmade souvenirs, and old cafés where you can rest between shops.

The best way to enjoy the bazaar is to walk without hurrying and to bargain politely. Ask your guide for trusted shops and for tips on the best time to visit Khan el-Khalili, which is usually in the afternoon and evening when the market is at its liveliest. About an hour is allowed in the programme.

Coptic Cairo and lunch

Coptic Cairo is the oldest Christian quarter of the city and holds the Hanging Church, built over the gate of a Roman fortress, the Church of St Barbara and the Church of Abu Serga, which tradition links to the Holy Family's flight into Egypt. The narrow lanes, icons and wooden ceilings give a very different atmosphere from the rest of the day.

Lunch is not included in the default option, so you can choose a local restaurant on the way, and your guide can suggest places. The full day runs about seven hours of touring, or eight to nine hours with transfers, and the exact order may change depending on traffic and opening hours.
