Full Description
Philae Temple, the island sanctuary of Isis
Philae Temple is the centrepiece of the day and the main reason people book a private Philae tour from Aswan. The sanctuary of Isis was built under the Ptolemies from the third century BC and added to by the Romans, and worship of the goddess lasted here longer than almost anywhere else in Egypt. The pylons, colonnades and Trajan's Kiosk rise directly from the water.
The original island was threatened by flooding, so the temples were moved block by block to Agilkia Island between 1972 and 1980 under UNESCO's guidance. Your private motorboat crossing takes about ten minutes, and the visit lasts roughly an hour and a half. With your own guide you can pause at the reliefs you like and photograph the kiosk in good light.
The Aswan High Dam and Lake Nasser
The High Dam, completed in 1970, is about 3.8 kilometres long and 111 metres high, and it created Lake Nasser, among the largest man-made lakes in the world. It ended the yearly flood that had shaped Egyptian farming for thousands of years and gave the country hydroelectric power and a stored water supply for dry years.
The viewpoint on the crest looks over the lake on one side and the Nile on the other, with a tall lotus-shaped memorial nearby. Your guide explains how the dam was built and how the Nubian temples were rescued from the rising water as a result. The stop takes about 30 to 40 minutes and makes a useful break between sites.
The Unfinished Obelisk in the granite quarries
The Unfinished Obelisk lies in the northern granite quarries of Aswan, source of the red stone used in temples and colossal statues throughout Egypt. At about 42 metres and close to a thousand tonnes, it would have been the largest obelisk ever raised, but a crack ran through the granite and the work was abandoned.
Because it was left in the rock, you can see exactly how obelisks were cut: the trenches around the shaft and the pounding marks made with hard stone balls. It is linked by many scholars to Hatshepsut's reign. A visit takes around 30 minutes, and your guide can add the view over the quarry floor and the city beyond.
A Nubian village on the Nile
After the monuments, the tour crosses to a Nubian village, where the pace slows. Nubia is the old land along the Nile between Aswan and Sudan, with its own language, music and traditions, and many families still live in houses painted in blue, green and orange with domed roofs and open courtyards.
You walk the lanes, see the murals and local shops, and learn about daily life, crafts and the warm hospitality that Nubian communities are known for. Ask before photographing people and keep a little cash for crafts or tips. For many guests this is the part that turns a list of sights into a real feel for Aswan.
Planning your private day in Aswan
The tour starts at 08:00 with pickup from your hotel and lasts about six hours, so you are back by early afternoon. October to April is the most comfortable season; in summer the early start matters because stone, dam and quarry are fully exposed to the sun.
With your own vehicle and guide, you can reorder the stops, lengthen a favourite visit or add a cold drink break. Wear comfortable shoes for steps and uneven stone, modest clothing with shoulders and knees covered, and bring a hat, sun cream and water. The motorboat to Philae is included along with all entrance fees, so there is nothing to queue for or pay on the day apart from tips and any extras you choose.
