Full Description
Kom Ombo Temple on the Nile
Kom Ombo is the first temple on the road north from Aswan, roughly forty kilometres away, and it stands right on a bend of the Nile. Built under the Ptolemies from the second century BC, it is a double temple: two entrances, two sanctuaries and two matching halls, one side for Sobek, the crocodile god, and the other for Horus the Elder.
Your guide shows you the reliefs, including a wall of medical and surgical instruments and a calendar, and the small museum of mummified crocodiles beside the site. A private visit lets you linger by the river terrace for photographs. A Kom Ombo day trip from Aswan is the easiest introduction to Ptolemaic temples, and the visit takes about an hour.
Edfu and the Temple of Horus
The Temple of Horus at Edfu is the best-preserved major temple in Egypt and, after Karnak, the second largest. Built between 237 and 57 BC, it follows the classic plan of pylon, open court, hypostyle halls and sanctuary, and the pylon is about thirty-six metres high. Two granite falcons guard the entrance.
Because most of the roof survives, the inner rooms are dark and echoing, which helps you picture the rituals. Reliefs on the walls tell the story of the battle between Horus and Seth. Your guide explains each scene. Plan about an hour and a half; a private morning arrival means fewer tour groups than later in the day.
Esna Temple, the optional extra stop
On the second option, the route adds Esna Temple, about fifty kilometres south of Luxor. What remains is the hypostyle hall of a temple to the ram-headed god Khnum, built in the Ptolemaic and Roman periods and sunk about nine metres below the modern town, with twenty-four columns topped with plant capitals.
The columns and ceiling keep traces of paint, including an astronomical ceiling with zodiac scenes, and the hymns carved on the walls are among the last hieroglyphic texts written in Egypt. The stop takes about forty-five minutes and adds roughly an hour to the day. It is a good choice if you love detail and want a quieter site.
The road from Aswan to Luxor
The journey between Aswan and Luxor follows the Nile Valley through sugar cane fields, villages and desert edges, and a private car turns the transfer into part of the sightseeing. The road passes Kom Ombo and Edfu, and the drive from Aswan to Luxor takes about three and a half hours without stops.
With your own driver, you can ask for a comfort break, a photograph of the river or a stop for refreshments, and you can start early to beat the heat. Many travellers choose this tour because it replaces a separate train or taxi transfer with a day of temples, so you arrive in Luxor with the main sites already seen.
Arriving in Luxor
The tour ends with a drop-off at your hotel in Luxor, whether it is on the East Bank near Karnak and the Corniche or on the West Bank. Luxor is often called the world's greatest open-air museum, and arriving in the late afternoon gives you the evening to rest before exploring Karnak, Luxor Temple and the tombs.
Our team can suggest a plan for the next days, such as the Valley of the Kings and Hatshepsut's Temple on the West Bank. The tour is one way, so the return to Aswan is not included, but we can arrange further private tours and transfers from Luxor if you wish.
