Full Description
Philae Temple, the island of Isis
Philae is the highlight of any private Philae Temple tour from Aswan. The sanctuary of the goddess Isis was built mainly under the Ptolemies from the third century BC and added to by Roman emperors, and worship of Isis continued here for centuries after it faded elsewhere. Trajan's Kiosk, the great pylons and the colonnaded courts rise straight from the water.
When the High Dam threatened to flood the original island, the temples were taken apart and rebuilt between 1972 and 1980 on nearby Agilkia Island, set so that the view matches the old one. The boat crossing from the landing takes about ten minutes, and visitors usually spend an hour or more among the reliefs. Early morning light is calm and the best for photographs.
The Aswan High Dam and Lake Nasser
The High Dam was built across the Nile between 1960 and 1970 and changed Egypt's relationship with the river. It is about 3.8 kilometres long and 111 metres high, and it holds back Lake Nasser, one of the largest man-made lakes in the world. Before it, the yearly flood decided the harvest; today the dam controls the water and produces electricity.
From the top you look over the lake on one side and the narrowed Nile on the other, and a tall lotus-shaped monument stands nearby as a memorial to the work. Your guide explains the engineering and the rescue of the Nubian temples that followed. The stop is short, usually 30 to 40 minutes, and an easy break between the two temple sites.
The Unfinished Obelisk in the northern quarries
The Unfinished Obelisk lies in the ancient granite quarries of northern Aswan, where stone for temples and statues across Egypt was cut. Had it been finished, it would have measured about 42 metres and weighed close to a thousand tonnes, larger than any obelisk ever raised. A crack appeared in the granite, and the workers left it where it lay.
Because it was never moved, it shows the whole method: you can see the trenches and the marks of the dolerite pounding balls the workers used to cut granite. It is often linked to Queen Hatshepsut's reign. A visit takes roughly 30 minutes, and your guide can also show the quarry floor and the view across the city.
Aswan, the southern gateway of Egypt
Aswan sits at the First Cataract of the Nile, where rocky islands break the current, and it was the ancient frontier between Egypt and Nubia. Its warm light, palm-lined banks and granite hills make it calmer than other Egyptian cities, and Nubian culture is still part of daily life here.
Because the three sites sit within a short drive of one another, you can see them all in a morning or afternoon without rushing. If you are searching for the best things to do in Aswan in half a day, this combination gives history, engineering and landscape in a single, easy plan, with your guide linking them into one story.
Planning your private half day in Aswan
Pickup times run from early morning to the middle of the day, so you can choose a slot that suits your hotel, ship or train. October to April is the most comfortable season; in summer an early start is wise because the stone and the dam top are exposed to the sun.
With your own vehicle and guide, there is room for extra photo stops and for changing the order if one site is busy. Philae is best visited first, while the light is soft and the boats are quiet. Carry your passport copy, sun protection and a little cash for tips and drinks, and tell your guide if you would like a longer stop anywhere.
