Full Description
The sunrise balloon ride over Luxor
The day begins in the dark, with pickup from your hotel at about half past four, and a short drive to the balloon launch site on the West Bank. You watch the crew inflate the balloon, climb into the basket and rise as the sun comes up, floating over the Nile, the farmland and the hills that hide the royal tombs. The flight lasts about forty-five minutes.
A balloon flight in Luxor is quiet and smooth, and you can see temples such as Hatshepsut's terraced temple and the Ramesseum from above, as well as villages waking up. The pilot chooses the height and direction according to the wind, and a strong wind can delay or cancel a flight, in which case our team will contact you. Wear layers, because it is cool before sunrise.
The Valley of the Kings and the West Bank
After the flight, the sightseeing begins on the West Bank, where the pharaohs built their tombs and funerary temples. The Valley of the Kings is the royal burial ground of the New Kingdom, with rock-cut tombs decorated with texts and scenes of the afterlife, and your live guide explains what you see and chooses the tombs that best show the art.
Alongside the valley, the West Bank's other sites, such as the terraced temple of Hatshepsut and the Colossi of Memnon, are among the main sights of a Luxor day tour. Your guide confirms the exact programme on the day, depending on opening times and crowds. Tombs are narrow and warm, and photography inside is limited, so bring water and wear light clothes.
Karnak Temple
Back on the East Bank, Karnak Temple is the largest temple complex in Egypt, built over more than a thousand years for the god Amun and his family. The Great Hypostyle Hall, with its forest of giant papyrus-shaped columns, the sacred lake and the tall obelisks make it the most memorable monument in Luxor.
Your guide explains the layout and history, so the vast courtyards make sense. Allow about two hours, and keep a hat on, because the courtyards are open to the sun. Because the entry fees are included, you do not need to queue to buy tickets, and the parking fees are covered too. If you ask whether Karnak is worth visiting, it is the temple most visitors remember best.
Luxor Temple and the East Bank
Luxor Temple stands beside the Nile in the middle of the city, built mostly by Amenhotep III and extended by Ramesses II. A row of towering columns, the courtyard with giant statues and the single obelisk at the entrance make it a compact and beautiful visit, and it is especially striking in the golden light of the afternoon.
The East Bank also has the old market and the corniche along the Nile, where you can take a walk or eat at a local café after the tour. Because meals and drinks are not included, you are free to choose your lunch spot with the guide's advice, and to spend as much or as little as you wish.
Practical details and what the day is like
The tour lasts about nine hours from pickup to drop-off, and the pace is full but manageable because you start early, before the heat. The vehicle is air-conditioned and the group is shared with other guests. Hotel pickup and drop-off is in Luxor only.
Bring comfortable shoes, a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen, and carry water. Tell us your hotel and the number of guests when you book, and our team confirms the details on WhatsApp the evening before. Ask us if you would like a particular site added, and we will see what the timing allows. Remember that a nine-hour day starting before dawn is tiring, so rest the evening before and eat a light breakfast.
