Full Description

The road north through Upper Egypt

Dendera lies about sixty kilometres north of Luxor and Abydos about a hundred and sixty, so the day involves a drive of about one hour fifteen to Dendera and about one and a half hours more to Abydos. The road follows the Nile through sugar cane fields, villages and palm groves, which is the everyday Egypt that most Luxor visitors never see.

In your own vehicle, you can ask for a rest stop, a photo or a change of pace. The early start at six in the morning means you reach the temples in the cool of the day, and you are back in Luxor in the afternoon. If you ask how to get from Luxor to Abydos, a private driver is the most reliable way, because public transport is slow and the temples are some distance from the towns.

Dendera: the Temple of Hathor

Dendera is dedicated to Hathor, the goddess of love, joy and music, and it is one of the best-preserved temples in Egypt, with its roof, walls and painted decoration still largely intact. Most of it was built in the Ptolemaic and Roman periods, on a site sacred for far longer. A high enclosure wall protects the complex, and you enter the courtyard through a gateway.

In the great hall, giant columns carry the face of Hathor on their capitals, and the ceiling above is painted with the sky goddess and the constellations in colours that remain remarkably vivid. Staircases lead to the roof and its small chapels, and the crypts below hold carved chambers. Your guide explains the myths and rituals, and the visit takes about two hours.

Abydos: the Temple of Seti I

Abydos was one of the most sacred places in ancient Egypt, the cult centre of Osiris, god of the afterlife, and pilgrims came for thousands of years. The Temple of Seti I was built around 1290 BC and completed by his son Ramesses II. It is famous for its reliefs, carved in fine low relief and often still coloured, which many Egyptologists consider among the most beautiful of the New Kingdom.

Behind the columned halls are seven chapels, each dedicated to a god, and the gallery known as the Abydos King List, which names the pharaohs in order. Your guide reads the scenes with you and explains why the temple matters. If you ask whether Abydos is worth the long drive from Luxor, the answer is yes, because few places show Egyptian art so close to its original beauty.

The Osireion and the practical day

Behind the temple stands the Osireion, a strange underground structure of massive granite blocks, built as a symbolic tomb of Osiris. Its great monolithic pillars and water-filled lower level feel older and plainer than the decorated temple, and it adds a mysterious end to the visit.

Lunch is included at a local restaurant, along with bottled water in the vehicle. You return to Luxor by late afternoon and are dropped at your hotel. Wear light, modest clothes, comfortable shoes and a hat. Both temples are quieter than Luxor's, so you can take your time and ask the guide as many questions as you like. Tips are not included, and a little cash is useful for small purchases.
