Full Description
The Red Sea desert camp near Makadi Bay
The camp sits in the Eastern Desert behind the Makadi Bay coast, where the resort lights fade and the land opens into gravel plains, low dunes and dry wadis with the Red Sea Mountains on the horizon. The drive from your hotel takes about half an hour, and you arrive in time to see the colours change before sunset.
The setting is built in the Bedouin tradition, with low seating, carpets, lanterns and an open fire pit. If you are looking for a Bedouin dinner near Makadi Bay, the appeal is the combination of an easy transfer, a real desert setting and an evening that is organised from arrival to drop-off, so you only need to relax.
Sunset camel ride
The camel ride is short and gentle, designed for first-timers. The dromedary camel is the animal that made desert travel possible across Arabia and North Africa, and in the Eastern Desert it is still part of Bedouin life. You mount while the animal kneels, sit back as it rises, and then sway slowly over the dunes while the sky turns orange, red and violet.
This is the best moment for photographs of the evening. Guides lead the camels on foot, so no riding experience is needed. Children can ride with an adult, and anyone who prefers to stay on the ground can watch and take pictures from the camp edge instead.
Bedouin hospitality: tea, coffee, karkade and bread
Bedouin culture is built on hospitality, and the evening starts the traditional way: sweet tea, cardamom coffee and karkade, the ruby-red hibiscus drink loved across Egypt, served hot or cold. Hosts explain why coffee is poured in small cups and why refusing a refill is a gesture in itself.
Then you join the hands-on activities. You press and bake Bedouin bread on a hot plate over the fire, and watch coffee beans being roasted in a pan and ground by hand with a mortar. These small, simple tasks are what many guests remember most because they connect the meal that follows with how people lived in this desert. Guests of every age are welcome to join in, and the hosts happily explain each step.
The four-course Bedouin dinner
Dinner is served at low tables under the stars. The first course brings tahini salad, Bedouin bread, baba ghanoush and a selection of Arabic starters. The main course is grilled chicken, barbecued kofta, basmati rice and oven-roasted potatoes, followed by a fruit salad and Arabic desserts to finish.
The menu is traditional and mild, so it suits children and adults alike. Please tell our team about any food allergy when you book, and note that outside food and drinks are not allowed in the camp. Water, tea and the welcome drinks keep the evening comfortable. The portions are generous, so there is no need to eat beforehand, and vegetarian guests can ask our team in advance about alternatives for the main course.
Live performance and stargazing
After dinner the camp turns to its entertainment: an interactive Bedouin show with live music, dance and storytelling, in which guests are invited to join in. It is an authentic glimpse of tradition rather than a staged spectacle, and the songs and stories explain how desert communities have kept their heritage alive.
The finale is stargazing. Far from the resort lights, the desert sky is dark and clear, and an expert guide points out constellations, planets and the band of the Milky Way when conditions allow. Winter nights are the best time to look up, but evenings cool quickly in every season, so bring warm clothing. Blankets and warm drinks help if the night air is cold.
