Full Description

The journey from Makadi Bay to Cairo

Cairo is a long way from the Red Sea coast, and the road runs north along the Red Sea coast and then west across the desert, taking roughly five to six hours each way from Makadi Bay. That is why the day starts in the middle of the night, with hotel pickup at around one o'clock in the morning, so you reach Giza when the sites open.

Many guests ask how to get from Makadi Bay to the Pyramids, and a guided day trip is the simplest answer: our driver and the air-conditioned vehicle handle the long road, and you can sleep on the way. The guide uses part of the drive to explain what you will see, and there are rest stops on the road. Bring a pillow or a light jacket for the journey.

The Giza Pyramids

The three great pyramids of Giza were built about 4,500 years ago as tombs for the pharaohs Khufu, Khafre and Menkaure. The Great Pyramid of Khufu is the largest, and it was the tallest building in the world for thousands of years. Your guide explains how they were built, who built them and why, while you walk on the plateau and take photographs from the best viewpoints.

Visitors often ask what time the Giza Pyramids open and whether they are worth visiting, and the answer is yes: seeing them in person gives a sense of scale no picture can. The default option includes the entry ticket to the Pyramids area. Entry inside the Great Pyramid is not included and is bought separately, and the interior is narrow and not for everyone.

The Sphinx and the Valley Temple

The Great Sphinx, carved from a single outcrop of limestone, lies at the foot of the plateau and is about seventy-three metres long. It is usually linked with Khafre, and the nearby Valley Temple, built of huge blocks of limestone and granite, was probably where the king's funeral rites began. The guide explains the legends and the long history of its restoration.

The best views of the Sphinx are from the terrace in front and from the side, and your guide knows where to stand for good photographs. Allow time to look at the temple's pillars and its granite blocks, which show how precisely the ancient builders worked. Many guests ask whether the Sphinx can be visited up close: you can walk to the terrace and the sides, while the paws and base are roped off to protect the monument.

The Grand Egyptian Museum

The Grand Egyptian Museum stands beside the Pyramids plateau and is the largest archaeological museum in the world dedicated to one civilisation. It houses tens of thousands of objects, including the galleries of Tutankhamun's treasures, shown together for the first time, and a colossal statue of Ramesses II in the main atrium. The default option includes the entry ticket.

Your guide leads you through the most important galleries, from the grand staircase lined with statues to the royal collections and the objects from the tombs, so you understand what you see. Many guests ask how long to spend at the Grand Egyptian Museum: with the Pyramids on the same day, a guided visit of about two hours is enough for the highlights.

Lunch, timing and the long return

After the museum, lunch is served at a local restaurant, with bottled water included and other drinks at your own cost. It is a good moment to rest and talk about the day before the long drive back to the Red Sea.

The return takes about the same time as the outward journey, and you arrive at your hotel late in the evening, so the day lasts about nineteen hours in all. The best time for the Pyramids is the cooler months from October to April, and the long day suits fit, curious travellers. Families with young children may find it too tiring. Carry water, rest on the vehicle when you can and eat well at lunch, so you have the energy for the last visit of the day.
