Full Description
The Great Pyramid of Khufu
The Great Pyramid of Khufu is the reason most travellers book a private Giza Pyramids tour. Built around 2560 BC as a royal tomb, it was once about 146 metres tall and stayed the tallest structure on Earth for nearly four thousand years. Today it rises to about 139 metres and is made of some two million limestone blocks, cut, hauled and stacked with remarkable precision. At its foot you can see how each course was laid and how the sides still face almost exactly north, south, east and west.
Your guide explains why it was built, who worked on it and how the burial complex around it was organised, then gives you time for photos. Entry inside any pyramid is not part of this tour, but your guide can explain how inside tickets work on the day if you would like to add them. Is Giza worth visiting? Yes, because the scale is the one thing no photograph prepares you for.
The Pyramids of Khafre and Menkaure
Beside Khufu stands the Pyramid of Khafre, built for his son. It looks taller than the Great Pyramid because it sits on higher ground, and the smooth casing stones still clinging to its summit show how all the pyramids once gleamed white in the sun. The Pyramid of Menkaure is the smallest of the three, but its lower courses are faced with granite, and three small queens' pyramids stand at its side.
The plateau is large and mostly open sand and stone, so a private vehicle makes a real difference. Our driver takes you between the main viewpoints wherever vehicles are allowed, and you save your energy for looking rather than walking in the heat. Your guide will also suggest the best time to visit the pyramids on the day: early light and late afternoon light are the kindest for photos.
The Great Sphinx and the Valley Temple
The Great Sphinx lies just below the Khafre pyramid, carved from a single outcrop of limestone bedrock. It is about 73 metres long and 20 metres high, with a lion's body and a royal head, and most Egyptologists link it to the reign of Khafre. The rock around it shows the soft layers that wind and sand have been wearing away for forty-five centuries, which is why conservation work never really stops.
Close by, the Valley Temple of Khafre is built from huge blocks of red granite and alabaster. It was the gateway to his funerary complex and was once joined to the pyramid by a long causeway. Your guide shows you the best angles for the classic photo of the Sphinx with the pyramids behind it and explains the role of the temple in royal burial rituals. If you prefer a calmer moment, ask to keep the Sphinx for the end of the visit.
The panoramic viewpoint on the plateau
A private Giza Pyramids tour from Cairo is also a photography tour. From the panoramic viewpoint on the desert plateau you see all three pyramids lined up with the small queens' pyramids at their feet, and the edge of modern Giza city far behind. Our driver stops here for as long as you like, so you can take wide shots, family portraits and quiet moments without a coach schedule hurrying you along.
Giza pyramids opening hours run from the morning until late afternoon and change with the season, so we time your pickup to give you a full, unhurried visit. Early starts are cooler in summer, while in winter the plateau is pleasant all morning. If you want a longer day, ask our team about private options that add the Grand Egyptian Museum, Memphis and Saqqara or a felucca ride on the Nile.
How to get to the Giza Pyramids from Cairo
Many visitors ask how to get to the Giza Pyramids. The plateau lies on the western edge of Greater Cairo, roughly thirty to sixty minutes from most hotels depending on traffic. With this private pyramids day trip from Cairo, you skip taxis, bargaining and queues: we pick you up from your hotel, drive you in an air-conditioned vehicle and wait while you explore.
Your entry tickets to the pyramids area are already included, so you walk in with your guide without joining the ticket line. Bring a hat, sunscreen and comfortable shoes, and use the bottled water we provide. Lunch is not included, so you are free to enjoy a meal wherever you like afterwards, and our team can suggest a good place near your hotel.
