Full Description
The Great Pyramid of Khufu
For almost 3,800 years the Great Pyramid of Khufu was the tallest structure built by human hands. Raised around 2560 BC for the pharaoh Khufu, it was once covered in polished white limestone that made it shine in the sun; most of that casing was later removed to build medieval Cairo. Today about 138 metres of the original height remain.
On a Pyramids of Giza half-day tour you have time to walk along its base and see the size of the lowest blocks, some weighing several tonnes. Our guide explains the ramps, the copper tools and the organised workforce behind the project. Inside, a narrow passage and the Grand Gallery lead to the King's Chamber; entry needs a separate ticket bought on the plateau.
Khafre, Menkaure and the Panoramic Viewpoint
The pyramid of Khafre, son of Khufu, looks taller than the Great Pyramid because it stands on higher ground and still wears a cap of its original casing. The third and smallest, built for Menkaure, was partly faced with red granite from Aswan, and three small queens' pyramids stand at its side.
The vehicle then climbs to the panoramic viewpoint on the desert edge, the classic spot for photos of the three great pyramids together. Camel and horse rides are offered here at extra cost if you would like one. Travellers often ask about the best time to visit the Pyramids of Giza: early morning is coolest and quietest, which is why this half-day tour starts in the morning.
The Great Sphinx and the Valley Temple
The Great Sphinx was carved from a single limestone outcrop, with a lion's body and a royal head wearing the striped nemes headdress. It is about 73 metres long and 20 metres high. Its nose has been missing for centuries, and fragments of its stone beard are now kept in museums, but its calm gaze toward the sunrise still silences visitors.
You reach the Sphinx through the Valley Temple of Khafre, a hall of massive granite pillars and alabaster floors linked to the pyramid by a causeway. Our guide shows you the best angle to frame the Sphinx with a pyramid behind it. This is the moment many travellers call the highlight of their Egypt trip.
Planning a Visit to the Giza Plateau
The Giza plateau lies on the western edge of Greater Cairo, 30 to 60 minutes from central hotels depending on traffic. The site opens early in the morning and closes in the late afternoon, with hours changing by season, and ticket gates now sit at the new visitor centre on the Fayoum road side. An evening sound and light show runs on a separate schedule.
How to get to the Pyramids of Giza without stress? A guided tour with hotel pickup removes the taxi bargaining, the queues and the pressure from vendors. Wear flat, closed shoes for sand and stone, carry water, and keep small change for toilets. If you have more time, combine this visit with the nearby Grand Egyptian Museum on another day.
