Full Description
Life on board between Aswan and Luxor
A Nile cruise from Aswan to Luxor is as much about the river as the temples. The 5-star ship has private cabins with river views, a restaurant serving breakfast, lunch and dinner, lounge areas and a sundeck for watching villages, water buffalo and date palms slide by. Standard, deluxe and luxury ships follow the same programme, differing in cabin size, facilities and dining.
Sailing happens mostly while you eat, rest or sleep, so the days are free for sightseeing. The lock at Esna lifts the ship between water levels, and the quiet hours on deck, especially at sunset, are the part many guests remember. Drinks are not included, so keep a little cash for them and for tips.
Kom Ombo Temple
Kom Ombo sits right on a bend of the Nile about forty kilometres north of Aswan, and sailing to it by ship is a natural way to arrive. The temple was built under the Ptolemies from the second century BC and is unique because it is double: everything is mirrored along a central axis to honour Sobek, the crocodile god, on one side, and Horus the Elder on the other.
Your guide shows you the carved reliefs, including a wall of surgical and medical instruments, and the small museum of mummified crocodiles beside the site. A visit takes about an hour. Evening light on the stone is soft, and the riverside setting makes it one of the easiest temples to photograph.
Edfu and the Temple of Horus
The Temple of Horus at Edfu is the best-preserved large temple in Egypt and the second largest after Karnak. It was built between 237 and 57 BC, and its pylon rises about thirty-six metres. Granite falcons stand in the forecourt, and the walls record the myth of Horus's battle with Seth in detail.
Inside, the hypostyle hall, the offering chambers and the sanctuary still hold their roof and their dark atmosphere, so you feel how a temple worked. Your guide explains the rituals and the building's story. Allow about an hour and a half, and note that morning is quieter, as many cruise ships arrive together.
Hot air balloon over Luxor's West Bank
On the last morning you rise before dawn to cross to the West Bank for a hot air balloon flight over Luxor, one of the best-known experiences in Egypt. As the sun comes up the pilot lifts the basket above the green farmland, the cliffs of Deir el-Bahari and the Theban hills, so you see the temples and tombs from above.
Flights depend on weather and wind, and the pilot decides on the day whether it is safe to fly. Dress in layers, as it is cool before sunrise. The flight lasts roughly forty-five minutes and finishes with a landing in the fields, where your driver collects you for the rest of the day.
Valley of the Kings and Hatshepsut's Temple
The Valley of the Kings is where New Kingdom pharaohs from the sixteenth to the eleventh century BC were buried in rock-cut tombs hidden in the hills. More than sixty tombs have been found, and the standard ticket lets you enter three, with painted corridors, burial chambers and astronomical ceilings. Photography inside tombs is restricted, so listen to your guide.
Nearby, the Temple of Hatshepsut at Deir el-Bahari rises in three colonnaded terraces against a limestone cliff, built around 1470 BC for the female pharaoh Hatshepsut. Its reliefs show an expedition to the land of Punt. Plan about two hours for the valley and one hour for the temple, and bring a hat and water.
Karnak Temple Complex
Karnak is the largest religious complex in Egypt, built and expanded over about two thousand years in honour of Amun-Ra, with a sacred lake, courts, obelisks and pylons. Its centrepiece is the Great Hypostyle Hall with 134 stone columns, some rising twenty metres, covered in carved scenes.
Your guide leads you along the processional route from the entrance, through the avenue of ram-headed sphinxes, to the inner sanctuaries. Allow about two hours. When people ask what time to visit Karnak, the morning is best for light and for fewer tour groups, and your cruise programme places it so you reach it before the heat. Many guests find the sound-and-light evenings at Karnak a good extra if the programme leaves a free night.
