Overview
This 90-minute guided walk brings together the two great Gothic treasures of the Île de la Cité, the island where Paris began. You meet your English-speaking guide by the Pont au Double, circle Notre-Dame Cathedral from the outside to read its facade, buttresses and new spire, then wander through the medieval heart of the island before finishing inside Sainte-Chapelle, where your entry is included and the walls seem made of coloured light. It is a shared small-group tour of up to 20 people, starting daily at noon, and it suits first-time visitors, families with teenagers and anyone who wants the stories behind the stones rather than a rushed photo stop. There is no hotel pickup; the meeting point is easy to reach on foot or by RER B.

Full Description
Notre-Dame Cathedral: the facade, the fire and the rebirth
Begun in 1163 and largely complete by the mid-fourteenth century, Notre-Dame de Paris is the cathedral against which all Gothic churches are measured. On this Notre-Dame guided tour you stay outside and look closely: the three carved portals of the west front, the gallery of kings, the great rose window and the two square towers. Your guide explains how the sculptures were read by medieval worshippers and why the cathedral was saved and reshaped in the nineteenth century.
In April 2019 a fire destroyed the roof and the spire. After five years of work by stonemasons, carpenters and roofers, the cathedral reopened in December 2024 with a rebuilt oak roof and a new spire. Standing on the square and along the south side, you see the cleaned limestone and the flying buttresses that hold up the vault, and you learn what was saved, what was rebuilt and how.
The Île de la Cité: where Paris began
The Île de la Cité is the island in the Seine where the first settlement of Paris grew more than two thousand years ago. Royal palace, cathedral and law courts all stood here, and the island still holds the bronze marker on the cathedral square from which road distances across France are measured. Walking between Notre-Dame and Sainte-Chapelle, your guide points out the medieval street plan, the remains of the old canons' quarter and quiet corners most visitors pass without noticing.
An Île de la Cité walking tour is the best way to understand how compact old Paris was: the cathedral, the royal chapel and the river are only minutes apart. This part of the walk is gentle and flat, with time for photos of the bridges, the riverside quays and the green bookseller boxes along the banks.
Pont au Double and the Left Bank views
The tour starts at the Pont au Double, the short bridge that links the Left Bank to the cathedral square. From here you get one of the finest views of Notre-Dame's south flank and its forest of buttresses rising above the Seine. Your guide sets the scene: the medieval Left Bank of students and scholars on one side, the island of kings and bishops on the other.
The meeting point is a two-minute walk from Saint-Michel Notre-Dame station on RER B, so it is simple to reach from anywhere in the city. If you want more time on the Left Bank afterwards, the Latin Quarter with its old bookshops and the little medieval church of Saint-Julien-le-Pauvre are just steps away.
Sainte-Chapelle: the jewel box of stained glass
Sainte-Chapelle was built in only about seven years in the 1240s as a royal chapel to hold relics of the Passion brought to Paris, including the Crown of Thorns. Its lower chapel, painted in deep blues and golds, served the palace staff. Climb the narrow spiral staircase and the upper chapel opens up: fifteen windows about fifteen metres tall, almost two thirds of the glass still original, telling biblical stories in more than a thousand scenes from Genesis to the Resurrection, with the later rose window glowing above the entrance.
With Sainte-Chapelle tickets included, the tour ends inside so you can stay as long as you like. Is Sainte-Chapelle worth visiting? On a bright day it is one of the most moving rooms in Europe; even on a grey day the colours glow. The chapel stands inside the Palais de Justice, so expect a security check at the entrance.
Planning your visit: timing and practical tips
The tour starts at 12:00 and lasts about 1.5 hours, which places you inside Sainte-Chapelle when the midday light is strongest on the southern windows. The best time to visit Sainte-Chapelle for colour is a sunny late morning or early afternoon; spring and autumn bring smaller crowds than July and August.
Sainte-Chapelle opening hours change with the season, and the chapel closes on a few public holidays such as 1 January, 1 May and 25 December. Wear comfortable shoes for the cobbles and the spiral staircase, carry only a small bag for the security check, and remember that the visit to Notre-Dame on this tour is from the outside. After the tour you are free to queue for the cathedral interior on your own.

It is a shared small-group walking tour with up to 20 people and an English-speaking local guide.
How long does the tour take?
About 1.5 hours, starting at 12:00. The tour ends inside Sainte-Chapelle and you can stay longer on your own.
Is hotel pickup included?
No. You meet the guide at the Pont au Double bridge, a two-minute walk from Saint-Michel Notre-Dame station on RER B.
What is included?
Sainte-Chapelle entry, the guided walk around the outside of Notre-Dame and across the Île de la Cité, and an English-speaking guide.
Do we go inside Notre-Dame Cathedral?
No. Notre-Dame is explained from the outside: the facade, the square, the buttresses and the new spire. Entry to the cathedral itself is free and you can visit it on your own after the tour, usually with a queue.
Is the price per person or per group?
The price is per person, with a reduced youth rate for ages 12 to 17. The booking panel on this page shows the current price for your date.
Is it suitable for children and reduced mobility?
Children and teenagers are welcome with an adult. The walk is flat, but the upper chapel of Sainte-Chapelle is reached by a narrow spiral staircase, so it is not suitable for wheelchair users.

They form one of the largest and best-preserved sets of thirteenth-century stained glass in the world: fifteen tall windows with more than a thousand scenes, most of them original.
What is the best time to see Sainte-Chapelle?
A sunny late morning or early afternoon gives the brightest colours, which is why this tour starts at noon. Spring and autumn are calmer than the summer peak.
What happens in bad weather?
The tour runs in light rain. In severe weather the provider may change or cancel the walk, and we help you rebook or arrange a refund.
What should I bring?
Comfortable shoes, a small bag for the security check, ID for youth tickets, and a camera; flash is not needed inside the chapel.
How do I book and confirm?
