Full Description
Polignano a Mare, the town on the cliffs
Polignano a Mare is one of the most striking towns in Puglia: its whitewashed old quarter sits on top of limestone cliffs that drop straight into the Adriatic, and the sea has hollowed out dozens of caves beneath the houses. The town lies about 35 km south-east of Bari, and regional trains from Bari reach it in roughly half an hour, which makes a Polignano a Mare day trip from Bari very easy.
From land you see the town from above; only from a boat do you understand how it hangs over the water. This tour shows you the side that most visitors never see, close enough to the cliffs to notice the layers of rock, the caves at sea level and the balconies high above.
Grotta Azzurra and the swallows' cave
The first caves on the route are some of the most beautiful. The Grotta Azzurra, or Blue Cave, is famous for the glowing blue reflections that dance on its walls when sunlight enters through the water. Nearby, the Grotta delle Rondinelle takes its name from the swallows that nest in its vault, and Grotta Ardito opens in the cliffs a little further along.
The skipper steers the boat carefully into or in front of each cave, depending on the sea, and the guide explains how waves and rain dissolved the limestone over thousands of years. The light inside changes with the time of day, so every tour sees the caves a little differently. Keep your camera ready: these are the classic Polignano sea caves photos.
Lama Monachile and the caves beneath the old town
The heart of the tour is the stretch below the old town. Lama Monachile, also called Cala Porto, is the narrow pebble beach squeezed between two cliffs and crossed by an old stone bridge on the ancient Roman road, the Via Traiana. From the water you see the whole cove framed by the houses on both sides.
Close by, the boat passes beneath the largest sea caves of Polignano, carved directly under the old town, where the cliff walls rise like a cathedral above the water. A little offshore stands the Hermit's Rock, a lonely sea stack where, local legend says, a hermit once lived. You also pass Cala Paura, a small cove with a quiet beach, before heading towards the swim spot.
Swimming and snorkelling at a hidden spot
Away from the busy beaches, the skipper takes you to a secluded spot that does not appear on maps. The engine stops and you can dive into the clear water, float beneath the rock formations and look at the seabed below. Snorkelling equipment is available on board for anyone who wants to explore under the surface.
After the swim a freshwater shower and a shaded area let you relax while the boat continues along the coast. Soft drinks and taralli, the crunchy ring-shaped snacks of Puglia, are served on board on the way back. Groups are kept small, so there is time to ask questions and space to sit comfortably.
San Vito harbour and the coast towards Monopoli
The tour starts and ends at San Vito, a small fishing harbour just north of Polignano, watched over by a medieval abbey right on the water. In the default option you meet in Polignano town centre and ride about 5 minutes to the harbour; the second option meets directly at San Vito and is best if you have a car.
Is a Polignano a Mare boat tour worth it? For most visitors it is the highlight of a stay in this part of Puglia. The best time to go is from late May to early October, when the sea is warm enough to swim; morning departures are often calmest, while late afternoon tours enjoy warm golden light on the cliffs.
