Full Description
Polignano a Mare, the town on the cliffs
The first stop is Polignano a Mare, built on a limestone headland about 40 km south of Bari. Its old centre has narrow lanes, small squares and terraces that end over the Adriatic, and a Roman bridge crosses the Lama Monachile cove, where a pebble beach sits between two cliffs.
Plan on about two and a half hours. Most guests ask how to get to Polignano a Mare from Bari; on this tour the coach brings you directly, leaving you free to look for the best viewpoints, take photographs of the sea caves from above and have a coffee in the old town.
Monopoli and its old harbour
Monopoli is a working coastal town with a quieter character than its neighbour. The Porto Vecchio is full of wooden fishing boats painted in bright colours, and the old town behind it is a grid of whitewashed houses, small churches and a castle by the sea. The cathedral, with its baroque interior, is worth a few minutes.
Two hours here let you stroll along the sea wall, visit the castle viewpoint and find a place for lunch. It is the town on this route where you will feel closest to everyday life in Puglia.
Alberobello and the trulli of Rione Monti
Alberobello is the highlight for many guests. UNESCO listed the town in 1996 for its trulli, round dry-stone houses with conical roofs, and the Rione Monti quarter holds hundreds of them, many now shops and small guesthouses. The streets climb a hillside, and the view over the roofs from the top is the reason most people take an Alberobello day trip.
A museum ticket is included, giving you a look inside a trullo, and you have around two and a half hours in total. Is Alberobello worth visiting? Yes, especially in spring and early autumn, when the town is less crowded than in midsummer.
