Full Description
The Castellana Caves, a vast underground system
The Castellana Caves, Grotte di Castellana in Italian, are a karst system formed over millions of years as water dissolved the limestone of the Murgia plateau. They were explored in 1938 and now rank among the best-known caves in Italy. The system extends for kilometres, and the guided route opens a selected part of it with stairs, lighting and paths for visitors.
Searching for a Castellana Caves guided tour usually leads to two options: a short route and a longer one. This ticket covers the short route, a 1 km route that takes about 50 minutes and shows the main caverns.
What you see along the route
The visit starts with the Grave, a huge opening, about 100 metres long and 60 metres deep, that connects the underground world with the outside. From there the path winds through chambers of different shapes, passing stalactites hanging from the roof, stalagmites rising from the floor and flowstones that look like frozen waterfalls. Many formations have names inspired by shapes early explorers thought they saw.
The English-speaking guide explains how the formations grow and why the caves matter, so you learn as you go rather than only looking. The temperature stays around 16 degrees all year, so a light jacket is useful even in summer.
The White Cave and the full route
The most famous chamber is the White Cave, known for the alabaster-like white of its crystal formations and often called one of the most beautiful caves in the world. It is reached only on the full route, which is longer and not part of this short tour.
If seeing the White Cave is important to you, choose the full route when you book. The short tour is a very good option if you have limited time, young children or prefer a gentler visit.
