Full Description
Villa del Balbianello on the Lavedo promontory
Villa del Balbianello stands at the very tip of the Lavedo promontory, a wooded headland that juts into Lake Como between Lenno and Ossuccio. A cardinal and patron of letters commissioned the villa at the end of the 18th century as a retreat for scholars, building it on the site of a Franciscan friary whose church with twin bell towers still faces the lake.
Later a Milanese explorer and collector restored it and filled it with souvenirs of his expeditions, and since 1988 Italy's national heritage trust has cared for the estate and its garden. Its setting is so striking that it has become one of the most photographed places on the lake and a well-known filming location for international cinema.
The gardens: statues, sculpted trees and blooms
The garden follows the shape of the promontory, climbing in terraces from the water to the summit. Gravel paths lead you past lawns, flower beds and balustrades topped with statues, while the plane trees are pruned into candelabra forms and the holm oaks are clipped into tidy umbrellas, creating the theatrical look the villa is known for.
Spring brings azaleas, rhododendrons and wisteria; summer offers deep shade on the upper paths; and in autumn the colours of the woods frame the lake beautifully. Allow at least an hour to walk all the terraces, stop at the viewpoints and take photos, and more if you like to sit quietly and enjoy the garden. Photographers will find the best angles on the middle terraces, where the trees frame the water.
The Loggia Durini and the views
The ascending path ends at the Loggia Durini, an 18th-century open gallery that crowns the whole complex. Its columns are wrapped in creeping fig, and its two sides face different panoramas: south towards Comacina, the only island in Lake Como, and the Tremezzina coast; north towards the promontory of Bellagio and the central part of the lake.
This is where the ticket's mention of the balcony and terraces makes sense: the loggia is the best viewpoint of the estate and one of the finest on the whole lake. Late afternoon light is especially beautiful here, so if you can, choose the afternoon slot. The shade of the loggia makes it a natural place to pause, and the view south takes in the Lenno shoreline and the wooded slopes you may have walked along to get here.
Practical visit: how to get there and opening hours
How to get to Villa del Balbianello depends on the day: the villa is reached on foot along a path across the promontory from Lenno, about a kilometre with some slopes, or by the boat service from the Lenno lakefront. Neither is included in this ticket, so plan ahead and arrive a little before your slot; our team can advise you when you book.
On Villa del Balbianello opening hours, the estate opens seasonally from spring to early November and not on every day of the week, so the booking calendar shows the dates available. Entry slots are at 10:00, 12:00 and 15:00. Is Villa del Balbianello worth visiting? For garden lovers and photographers it is one of the highlights of any Lake Como trip.
