Full Description

Cernobbio, your starting point

Cernobbio is an elegant lakeside town just a few kilometres north of Como, known for its grand historic villas, its waterfront promenade and its view straight down the western branch of Lake Como. Its pier is the meeting point for your boat, where the instructor gives you a safety briefing and shows you how to steer, accelerate and moor the boat before you set off.

Within minutes of leaving the pier you pass the gardens and façades of the villas that have welcomed travellers since the 16th century. Seeing them from the water is the best way to appreciate their setting, with lawns running down to private landing stages and mountains rising behind. For many visitors this is the most memorable boat rental on Lake Como, because you decide where to go.

Moltrasio, Laglio and the western shore

Heading north from Cernobbio, the shore becomes a string of villages that climb steeply up the green slopes. Moltrasio is known for its old stone houses, a Romanesque church and the grey stone once quarried here and used across Lombardy. A little further on, Laglio and Carate Urio line the shore with pastel houses, small harbours and terraced gardens.

With a two-hour rental you have time to cruise up to this stretch, slow down to admire the villas from close up and stop for a swim in a quiet spot. Remember to keep a safe distance from swimming areas and ferry piers, and follow the instructor's advice on speed near the shore. This is the heart of the classic Lake Como boat tour route, but with you at the wheel.

Nesso and its waterfall gorge

On the opposite shore, Nesso is one of the most picturesque villages on Lake Como. Its houses cling to both sides of a deep gorge, where two mountain streams meet and tumble into the lake as a waterfall. An old arched stone bridge crosses the mouth of the gorge, and seeing it from a boat is one of the best photo moments of any trip on the lake.

Nesso is easiest to reach with a rental of three hours or more, which gives you time to cross the lake, wait quietly near the gorge and return at an easy pace. In spring and after rain the waterfall is at its strongest. Remember that boats cannot enter the gorge itself, so admire it from the water at a safe distance.

Swimming, safety and the best time to rent a boat

Lake Como's clear water is ideal for a swim in summer, when the surface reaches pleasant temperatures. Stop the engine away from the shore and ferry routes, drop into the water and enjoy the view of the mountains from the lake. Life jackets are provided for everyone on board, and the instructor explains the basic rules of navigation before departure.

The best time to rent a boat on Lake Como is from late spring to early autumn. Mornings are usually calm, while in the afternoon a southerly breeze called the Breva often picks up, so beginners may prefer an early start. Fuel is paid on the spot for each hour of use, and the person driving the boat must be an adult with a valid ID.
