Full Description
The Uffizi Gallery: History of the Building
The Uffizi was built from 1560 as offices, uffizi in old Italian, for the magistrates of Florence, in a long U-shaped block that runs from Piazza della Signoria to the Arno. The rulers soon turned the top floor into a gallery for their collection of paintings, statues and curiosities, and visitors could see it on request from the late 16th century.
In 1737 the last heir of the ruling family left the collections to the city on condition that they never leave Florence, and the gallery opened to the public in 1769. Today the Uffizi Gallery in Florence is among the oldest and most visited art museums in the world, with long corridors lined with ancient sculpture and ceilings painted with playful grotesques.
Masterpieces Inside the Uffizi
The guided route follows Italian art in order. It begins with large gold-ground altarpieces of the Madonna enthroned, then the early Renaissance with the profile portraits of the Duke and Duchess of Urbino. The highlight for most visitors is the room holding the Birth of Venus and Primavera, painted for Florentine patrons in the late 15th century.
Further on you see the Annunciation, a youthful masterpiece of the High Renaissance, the Doni Tondo, a round panel painted with sculptural figures, the Venus of Urbino and a dramatic Medusa painted on a parade shield. The octagonal Tribuna, with its mother-of-pearl dome, was designed to show the family's most precious pieces. Your guide picks the stories behind each work.
Planning Your Visit: Tickets, Hours and Time Needed
Uffizi opening hours are usually Tuesday to Sunday from 8:15 to 18:30, closed on Mondays, 1 January and 25 December. Entry slots sell out in high season and the queue without a reservation can take hours, which is why Uffizi tickets with a guide and reserved access save so much time. Even with a reservation there may be a short wait at the security check in peak months.
Plan two to three hours in total: the 1.5-hour guided visit plus time on your own afterwards. Large bags and food are not allowed inside, so leave them at our luggage deposit. The best time to visit the Uffizi is the first slot of the day or late afternoon, outside the summer peak, when the rooms are calmer.
Piazzale degli Uffizi and the Terrace
The meeting point, Piazzale degli Uffizi, is the long courtyard between the two wings of the gallery. Niches along its colonnade hold marble statues of Tuscan thinkers, artists and scientists, and street artists often work under the arcades. At one end it opens onto Piazza della Signoria, at the other onto the Arno.
After the tour, do not miss the terrace above the Loggia dei Lanzi, where you can see the tower of Palazzo Vecchio up close and the cathedral dome across the rooftops. Leaving the gallery, the Ponte Vecchio is a two-minute walk along the river, and Piazza della Signoria is right outside, so the visit fits easily into a day in central Florence.
