Full Description
Florence Cathedral and Brunelleschi's dome
Florence Cathedral, Santa Maria del Fiore, was begun in 1296, but for over a century it had no dome because no one knew how to cover such a wide space. Filippo Brunelleschi solved it in the fifteenth century, building the dome between 1420 and 1436 without the wooden framework normally used, using an ingenious double shell and a herringbone pattern of bricks.
If you are searching for Brunelleschi's Dome tickets or how to get to the Duomo in Florence, the cathedral stands in Piazza del Duomo in the heart of the historic centre, a ten-minute walk from Santa Maria Novella station. The dome is easy to spot from almost anywhere in the city.
The dome climb: 463 steps between two shells
The climb has 463 steps, with no lift, and passes through narrow stairways and low passages between the inner and outer shells of the dome. Along the way you can see the herringbone brickwork up close and understand how the structure was built without a frame, a feat that still impresses engineers today.
Halfway up, a gallery gives you a close-up view of the Last Judgment frescoes painted inside the dome in the sixteenth century by Giorgio Vasari and Federico Zuccari. The ascent takes about forty-five minutes to an hour and involves queues on the stairs, so wear comfortable shoes and be prepared for steep, narrow spaces.
The top: views of Florence
At the top, an open terrace around the lantern gives one of the finest views in Italy. You look over the red rooftops of Florence, the Arno, the surrounding Tuscan hills and, right beside you, Giotto's bell tower and the Baptistery of San Giovanni.
Is the dome climb worth it? Yes, for most visitors it is the best experience in Florence, combining engineering, art and views. The best time to climb is early in the morning, when it is cooler and quieter, or at the end of the day for softer light. The dome is not suitable if you are claustrophobic or have heart or mobility problems.
The guided Duomo tour option and practical tips
The second option adds a guided visit of Florence Cathedral with an expert, who explains the history, the art and the architecture before you climb the dome at your own pace. If you would like context on how the cathedral was built and decorated, this option gives you more depth than the audio guide alone.
Brunelleschi's Dome opening hours change by season and on religious days, so check your date in the booking panel. The dress code for the cathedral requires shoulders and knees to be covered. Bags are restricted, and the climb is timed, so arrive a little before your slot. The default audio guide works on your own phone, so bring headphones.
