Full Description

Piazza Navona: Rome's Baroque stage

Piazza Navona keeps the long oval shape of the Stadium of Domitian, built in the first century AD for athletic contests, and the houses around it stand on the stadium's old seating. In the 17th century the square became the showpiece of Baroque Rome: the Fountain of the Four Rivers rises in the centre with its obelisk and giant figures representing the Nile, the Ganges, the Danube and the Río de la Plata, facing the curved facade of the church of Sant'Agnese in Agone.

Your walk spends about 20 minutes here, with time for photos of the Fountain of the Moor and the Fountain of Neptune at either end. At sunset the ochre buildings glow and street artists set up along the square, so it is one of the best places in Rome to start an evening walking tour.

The Pantheon

A few streets away stands the Pantheon, a temple to all the gods rebuilt in the 2nd century AD and still one of the best-preserved buildings of ancient Rome. Its portico of 16 granite columns leads to a round hall covered by a concrete dome 43 metres across, with an open oculus in the centre. Converted into a church in the 7th century, it has been in continuous use for nearly two thousand years.

On this tour you admire the Pantheon from Piazza della Rotonda outside, while your guide explains how the dome was built and why it has survived. Entry is not included. If you want to see the interior, Pantheon tickets can be booked separately for another time, and the building is usually open daily.

A hidden corner of the historic centre

Between the Pantheon and the Trevi Fountain the guide adds a hidden-gem stop of about 20 minutes, chosen to show a side of the old town that most visitors walk straight past. This is where a guided walk earns its value: small churches, quiet courtyards, ancient columns built into later walls and the details that tell how the city grew layer by layer.

The route through the lanes of the Campo Marzio and Trevi districts is mostly flat, on cobbled streets, and covers a comfortable distance for most walkers. Comfortable shoes are recommended, and the guide keeps a steady pace with stops in the shade of side streets on warm evenings.

The Trevi Fountain

The Trevi Fountain is the largest Baroque fountain in Rome, completed in 1762 against the side of Palazzo Poli. Ocean rides a shell-shaped chariot pulled by sea horses and tritons, surrounded by carved rocks and cascades of water that come from the Aqua Virgo, an aqueduct first opened in 19 BC and still feeding the fountain today.

You spend about 30 minutes here, the longest stop of the tour, with time to hear the story of the aqueduct and to follow the tradition of throwing a coin over your shoulder to ensure your return to Rome. Visiting the Trevi Fountain at dusk is one of the best times: the lights come on and the white stone stands out against the evening sky.

Piazza di Spagna and the Spanish Steps

The tour ends at Piazza di Spagna, named after the Spanish embassy to the Holy See that has stood here since the 17th century. The 135 travertine Spanish Steps, built in the 1720s, climb from the square to the church of Trinità dei Monti, and at their foot lies the Barcaccia, a fountain shaped like a half-sunken boat.

After about 30 minutes of stories and photos, your guide leaves you in the heart of Rome's elegant shopping district around Via Condotti, with restaurants and the Spagna metro station close by. Climbing to the top of the steps at the end of the walk gives a lovely evening view over the rooftops towards St Peter's.
